343 Oettinger and R-Sport Brochures

Post by trabitom99 » 13 Feb 2007 01:25 pm

I've finally got around to scanning a couple of my rarer 343 brochures. I'm afraid I'm a pretty poor translator – so bear with me!

1979 Volvo 343 Oettinger
Image

The 343 Oettinger, commissioned from the VW/Audi tuning company Oettinger by Dieter Laxy, Volvo Deutschland's sales director, was presented at the Nürburgring for the 1979 model year. Oettinger had up until then only been tuning VWs and Audis, and one source claims the rear spoiler was the same one fitted to Sciroccos.

The idea was give the 300's image a boost - it only being available with the variomatic gearbox until Autumn 1978 hadn't really been doing its reputation much good.

Available colours: red & silver (both metallics)

B14 Renault engine, 1596 ccm instead of 1397 ccm
66 kW / 90 PS instead of 51 kW / 70 PS

0-100kph (62 mph) 12,5 s instead of 16 s
Top speed 165 kph (102,5 mph) instead of 150 kph (93 mph)

Technical changes:
forged crankshaft with a longer stroke,
revised cylinder head,
different carburettor
sebring exhaust,
enlargend and polished intake ducts & exhaust valves

Bodywork / trim changes:
front & rear spoiler
alloys
rev counter
seat covers
decals

Number of models made: 125

1981 Volvo R-Sport

The Volvo R-Sport was based on a 343 DLS from the 1981 model year (wraparound bumpers) and it's been discussed a fair bit before:

http://www.volvo300mania.com/forum-uk/v ... php?t=4209

Available colours: red & white (?)

B19 R-Sport Volvo engine, based on B19A 1954 ccm (?)
90 kW / 123 PS instead of 70 kW / 95 PS

0-100kph (62mph) 9,5 s
Top speed 180 kph (111,9 mph)

Technical changes:
crankshaft
electric fan
twin solex carburettors
sports exhaust

Bodywork / trim changes:
front & rear spoiler
alloys
decals

Number of models made: 100 (although many "lesser" 343's and 340's were fitted with R-Sport accessories and tuning kits AFAIK not being sold as a models in their own right)

Nice work chap! Very interesting info! The recent R sport brochure got to silly prices on Ebay I think! Good to see someone has got one, and as Steve said, thanks for sharing it, and giving everyone a chance of understanding it!

What we need is for the Bottrill fellow to post up pics of the Oettinger cyl head he has lurking in his shed.

There certainly was Mick, a white car........ I'll look it out...... I started scanning them all one night and sending them directly to Aymat, got to silly o'clock and remembered work o'clock was looming. Got through most of my brochure collection including the ones you donated mate, so there should be an interesing selection added to the site one day. With all the different sources, languages and selections we should cover most of the brochures!

Never heard of it and doubt its existence, the 531 head flows well on a 2.0 - can't see there being much to upgrade :?

Any chance of you uploading the R-Sport brochure beforehand? I'd be plenty interested. Might be a while before Aymat gets round to updating the brochures section.

BTW there's a picture of a 1980 343 with R-Sport accessories in the French section:

There's only talk of

GT-striping
front spoiler
sunroof
alloy wheels

though, no engine tuning.

Evo engines are made in Sweden, but most of them are not made by Volvo. Engines are used in rally cross, 2.8l and 300-320hp from NA engine with 8 valves, engines does cost typically around 20 000€

Custom block, custom alloy head, they do resemble Volvo parts but are newly made with new molds.

Some pics that are probably only ones you will find, these heads and engines are big secrets I have found. http://www.janiervast.com/kuvat/index.p ... volvo/evo/

Heads have been available separately too, for example in those pics, block is not evo block, but head is, can't remember now cost of those heads, but it will cost more than any 360, that is used head, you can't buy new one even if you would have money, they don't sell them to just anyone ;)

I think that white car had twin carbs + K-cam, have seen tech specs somewhere, maybe Fuse got some scans stored from that, but don't know when he has next holiday from army so he could post some links :P
