I thought I would post a few piccies of the finished interior, now that "Marilyn" is all back together.





This is the 100% all original 1978 interior, no repairs were needed here.

Now it a matter of some tweeking & proper tuning to get her back on the road for the upcoming Car Show season...first show is 5 May.

I thought we had come to the conclusion that the ashtray was removed to make way for a non-original home made gauge panel. An OEM auxillary gauge panel was available, but it fitted lower down. Tom posted a picture of one many moons ago.

Door mirrors aren't original either.

Can I see a close-up of the driver's side windscreen pillar interior trim?

What's that round thing on the dash above the glovebox and to the right of the right/centre air vent?

What is "original" anyway?

The car is a Swedish Spec so there are bound to be many discrepancies to what you are used to.

All that is left is some "Elbow Grease" to complete the cleaning process. I am still finding dust in every crevasse from the panel banger's shop.

What is original, a good question indeed.

Is replacing the wing mirrors with the models that volvo supplied as an official replacement acceptable? In my eyes yes, though I could have expected a better effort from John. If one can get a replacement roof smack in the middle of nowhere......
Is replacing the interior trim with that of a later model original? Yes, original 300 series but not really 1978. Not even easy to source over here....

How about the clock in between the vents? YES indeed original, there was a cut-through in place!

And the homemade gauge panel? Real 70's style which I would prefer to a smelly rusty ashtray

Not sure about the mirrors RJ...
They were on the Volvo from it's first owner who brought it over from Sweden. So, if these are not correct I have no clue. Are they by chance from a later model such as the 1980 ??
Only other type I have seen are these;

Also in Chrome version
I have only discovered a few of the strange Swedish Spec aspects of this car such as the motor (B14OS-000012475) with it's Air Filter thermostat, the Headlight wipers and possibly the wing mirrors.
The car has been returned to the condition when it first arrived in the States.

I am sure John.
The mirrors you have were introduced for MY80 and were alse retrofitted to earlier vehicles as and when their mirrors broke.

Just a quick recap from the parts manual:

1976-77: Chromed mirrors (number 1 in the illustration),
1978: black (matt spray paint) version of the chromed mirrors (not really rustproof, (a variant on number 1 in the illustration)) or a version similar to that of a 200 series (number 2 in the illustration).
According to the parts manual it was only the 200 series version that was used on the Swedish specc'd cars.Be aware that these have a 300 series p/n so the are different to those of the 200 series!!
1979: black, plastic covered version of the chromed mirror (a variant on number 1 in the illustration),
1980: full plastic mirror as on your car (number 3 in the illustration).

I have all versions in my collection.

The mirrors on the orange/brownish 1977 car look to be 1978 or 1979 model, they are too small to really distinguish.
But be aware that of all versions (1976-79) a thinner Volvo 66 version exists.
I hope that this finishes the mirror discussion for once and all.

...of the strange Swedish Spec aspects of this car such as the motor (B14OS-000012475) with it's Air Filter thermostat, the Headlight wipers and possibly the wing mirrors.

Air filter thermostat inside the airfilter housing was standard for all markets as it replaced the manual throttle valve inside the housing.
The vacuum valve on the air filter housing was specifically for the Swedish market.
Headlamp wipers were standard in Scandinavia and an option for the other markets.

I have no clue to explain the discrepancies. I do know the car came here from Sweden in 1982 (through diplomatic channels) with it's original owner who sold the car in 2010.

I think I will keep the "1980's" mirrors on since they were Volvo original replacements after the second type was out of production and no longer available.
I found out by searching through the service records from the first owner that he had them changed in 1983 to improve vision, which they most certainly do.

Personally, I think they look nice on the 343 (better than those wimpy old types)

I have had it with DUCELLIER


This is what remains of my Ducellier Dizzy after it blew apart on the car (dropped most of the circ clips, one counterweight arm and bushings).

The Dizzy on "Marilyn" is the third Ducellier to disintegrate in the past year. Not having the desire to rebuild another one I'll be replacing it with a 123Ignition unit which is already on the way from Holland.

At least this is one less thing I will have to worry about in the future.

In the meantime; I have managed to get the accessory Vacuum gauge, as well as the Temp gauge working in the center dash and cleaning continues. The first show of the season is scheduled for 5 May.

Hi John.
Love the number plate. We wouldn't get away with that here
I took my bannana for a spin yesterday to take it to a different storage
place to allow me to lock up the GLS at night. It was great to get driving
it again. She will be going back on the road latter in the year.
