He does have a "minimum fee", so even though the trip to Cologne was 40km one way I still paid 50 Euros to collect the car. But yes, it's still a good price, the guy parks his van near me when he's at work, so he was the first person I called ... The other alternative was renting a trailer for 50 Euros and borrowing a mate's T4 (VW, not Volvo S40 ;-)) which can tow 2 tonnes, but this way was better :-)

Over the last few years the dealers did a good job of finding parts (the exhaust is probably NLA at Volvo for example) but the brakes seemed to stump them for some reason. As far as I can tell though, most parts should still be available from other sources, 360 wheel cylinders, master cylinder, that bit which distributes the brake pressure from front to rear "Bremskraftverteiler", not sure what that's called in English ... The brake pedal really does go far down to the floor, apparently it failed its MOT on rear brakes, but there's more to it than "just" that I think ... Also, it will need some welding - but nowhere near as much as my 343 vario needed, compared to that, this car is mint ;-)
SteveP wrote:I've just re-read again and quite shocked at the specifications, never realised they did a 4 speed 2.0! My 1982 343 DL came with rear opening windows, and arm rest too... they were really skimping!
The pre-360 "S-Model" B19A's only got a 4spd box as standard, with one exception, the '82 345 GLS "5 speed" (or "Blue Line" in Holland). Even the R-Sport had a 4-speed box ...

What really surprised me was that it has a 340-style petrol tank - no saddle bag tank around the transaxle! That was new to me ... EDIT: no it hasn't - FAIL!

Regarding equipment levels, I guess that's German-spec for you ;-) Our old MY 82 343 Junior didn't even have a clock, or a dipping rear-view mirror ...

Wow Tom, that is one nice DLS!! Only the 2nd DLS i've ever seen. They seem to be more rare than GLS's actually.

And very strange about the gastank. Is there no spare wheel at all in the car or how did they solve that?

And what was that rubbish you were talking about when you said you wanted to downsize your V300 addiction?!?

It was indeed quite low features at early 80's, I remember many German cars from that era and almost all had very basic stuff only, specially VW's there was nothing soft in those either, well except bodywork

I think it was 70's when here was mirror only one side of car, other one was extra option, even filler cap with lock was extra, no radio or even ready for radio as standard.

340 at those times was certainly not worse, imo.

I woke up at 5 this morning and thought exactly the same thing  I must be wrong ... had a peek at the parts catalogue, even though the part nr is different to later B19A/E tanks the pic is still the "saddle bag" type.
Jos360 wrote:Wow Tom, that is one nice DLS!! Only the 2nd DLS i've ever seen. They seem to be more rare than GLS's actually.
That doesn't surprise me, I would expect most people would have gone ahead and bought the top model rather than the "almost top model" ;-) They also dropped the DLS in the same MY as it was introduced.

I already had this car in mind when I mentioned that ;-)

My parents had a Mk1 Polo once. Cardboard door inserts, no passenger sun visor, meagre door straps / loops rather than moulded pulls ... Compared to that, this is luxury :-)

Of course it has a saddle bag tank. I may have got a bit over-excited and confused the diff with the gearbox

since vØlvØfreak allready linked this topic to V3C; i'm gonna return the favour

this is the topic of the youngest member of v3c, who hasn't even got his license yet, but owns a couple of pretty exclusive 300's. a 1981 GLS and a 1982 DLS both volvo B19 equipped,
the DLS was litteraly saved from banger racing, the guy never knew the rare stamp on the dls. the car that got traded for it was a 360 glt, wich had a load of rust allover the place.

it is probably the only 343 DLS in holland by now, topiclink: http://forum.volvo300club.nl/showthread.php?t=4046

and he is slightly starting a restauration, though the bodywork + chassis is in really poor condition: http://forum.volvo300club.nl/showthread.php?t=5256

but what a nice car Tom, looking great!

This has got to be the most useless update ever - but I wanted to do something on the car. It's been standing for 7 months, is covered in a layer of dust, cobwebs are in the wheel arches and a tyre is getting flat.

So I fitted some 13" chrome wheel trims (courtesy of Steve), wahey ;-)

Image

There isn't a huge difference  but it covers up some rusty spots on the steelies.
