Re: Hello. (New member) I brought pics!
Actually, having looked back, I'm inclined to change my mind back again.
I agree with you Chris that the complete assembly isn't standard.
I would think - like Marko (Fuse) has suggested - that the bearing itself is something off-the-shelf. (*Question: 6301?)
That leaves the question of whether or not the pressed housing and/or the outer rooobery bit is still serviceable.

Re: Hello. (New member) I brought pics!
Front bearing is 22cm in the tube, rear is 52cm. There is a tiny bit of play in the front bearing, less than 1/4mm I guess. If I pick the tube up and shake it nothing moves, no sound. There is a bit of bearing noise when I spin it but hard to tell if it's normal or just the tube amplifying it. The noise I spoke of only happens when I bang the tube or move it on the floor. Perhaps this is just resonance?
Another question, engine mounts seem to be as rare as hens teeth on a dodo. Does anyone have any solution? I have had a search around, heard mention of a 407 mount fitting but nothing definite. I'm researching making my own but would prefer a quicker solution for now.
Also. The parts catalogue available online. Is this reliable as I went to the dealer today and he told me the numbers were all unrecognised?
Thanks for all advice and help. I've done a lot of work on my cars in the past but nothing on this scale.

Parts numbers are correct. It's just that lots of them come up as OP, obsolete part. Which isn't all that surprising when they were last made in nineteen canteen.
The numbers do come in handy either for NOS, new old stock stashes and cross-referencing aftermarket stuff.

I agree, the 1.7 clutch bearings are completely standard parts. It's the fact the the rubber on those is bonded to them, they are not pressed into it. As for 360 ones, I've slept at least once since I last had one out, but given they are on the pressed tin then the rubber, every chance you could press them out.macplaxton wrote:I would think - like Marko (Fuse) has suggested - that the bearing itself is something off-the-shelf. Re: Hello. (New member) I brought pics!
OK, I have to admit partial defeat. On reassembly I cannot work out if I have done this right. Haynes says to press the old bush off the guide sleeve in the clutch housing if it is worn. I see no bush. The thrust bearing is not the same as the one I took out. Well, it is but the old one had two metal springs/plates. This bearing won't fit in the release arm with them swapped over but when not fitted I can pull the release bearing off the release arm with little force. Can't for the life of me work out which way the spring goes back on the pivot pin.. Any advice guys?
Many thanks.
Pics of the plates/springs I removed from the old bearing, should they be transferred onto this one?

Many thanks.

Those clips in the foreground look like they go on that bearing.

Now, time to crack on. Have finally got delivery of my new exhaust. €72 for the lot including gasket. Very happy with this.

Now I am back in business. Have a slow puncture to deal with but she'll be getting 4 new tyres soon enough. I am not getting the engine out yet. Have to get her on the road and doing the clutch nearly killed me. Feeling old. Just want to get this exhaust dry fitted to get her started so I can investigate if the rumble is gone. Would never have heard it without it. Ordered a new carb diaphragm which should be here in the next few days and will hopefully sort the chugging.

The exhaust is fitted, clutch works well but I have now diagnosed the rumble as a torque tube bearing. I hope to get an old unit and pull the bearings and replace them, will do a write up when I do.
Moved onto the engine for now and gave the engine a flush with a can of wynns, new oil filter, air, new plugs, leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm, condensor seems to be fine but I'm going to replace it since it is so cheap. The contact gap was way too small so adjusted that. Still not happy with the running, it is lumpy. Will be checking for air leaks but I suspect the coil. Might just replace that too.
My engine mounts are saggy so I bought a tube of sikaflex and I'm going to fill the bottom part with this to lift it back up where it should be.
Waiting for new shocks, lowering kit (50mm) and a complete set of poly bushings. Hopefully this will bring her handling to heel but not looking forward to fitting them. Got some new balljoints and track rod ends while I'm under there.
Off to read about the valve clearances. Not something I've done before so should be fun.

No problem, I'm busy too with Christmas and all. Will come up for it whenever you are ready. If all works out well I can fit new bearings in both and give you back a renovated one?
Re: Hello. (New member) I brought pics!
Tis the season to be jolly! Tra la la la la,
Not much fun at the moment. Waiting on a few bits and bobs. Caliper seals, bearings for the struts, balljoints and a bolt kit and wheel bearings. In the meantime, a bit of housekeeping.

The rear disc plates are shot really but they'll do for now until I find replacements, top mounts are good but the bearings need replaced. Calipers in good order but need a new set of dust covers and a new seal won't hurt. New poly bushes going on and Dai's lowering springs will finish the job. Doing the wheel bearings just as a precaution. Don't want to have to touch this for a few years.

Hi mate.
This is going to be some car when its finished.
Might have got at the tube today but up North
here it is pissing down with rain.
Feel sorry for those people on the mainland who
lost Christmas and there homes due to the weather.
Cheers Mark.

Re: Hello. (New member) I brought pics!
The weather is awful here, we have lost two trees in the garden. Roads are deathtraps with debris everywhere and the power is coming on and off all day. Still, nobody hurt and only superficial damage. As you say, others have it much worse. Last night we were trying to watch argo but the howling from the wind in the chimney made it impossible. Plus the power kept going off, resetting my home theater pc.
Managed to get the strut primed last night though. Off to give it a coat of black now. No rush on the torque tube. As you can see I have plenty to keep me busy at the moment.

Hahaha, stunning!
I've bought similar, I've no idea how people think replacing half a cars brakes is sensible.
