Brave work there man! I also have the nice highly geared diff in my GLS and it doesn't in any way feel bogged down. Nice long gaps between changes as well as 75mph @ 3000.

It's not so bad when all the rust is falling on the floor and not in your eyes and down the back of your neck!

I cleaned up the springs this evening, they look OK under the stuff.

I assume this green mark is to tell you which end is which as the springs are asymetrical.
Image
Nice to see the DAF mark on the bushes!

Theres a bit of rust in places but very light so they should clean up OK, the tar/cloth had kept them very clean.

Two questions for the experts out there:

1 How do I know they are GLT springs (they came off a GLT and I assume they are original but maybe not?) There is a number stamped on the end, is this usefull to tell them apart?

2. Is the only way to remove the bushes total destruction or does the metal inner come out to allow the rubber through? It's a pity to destroy them as they are not at all perished and no longer available. I'll be putting in Dai's bushes either way.

GLT springs should be thicker than 340 ones, that's one way to check.

Yes, the part number will tell you mate. Those springs have been covered in so much oily rubbish it's protected the metal superbly, they look in amazing condition. Bushes, I had to destroy a set in similar condition recently, you may be able to press them out but I wouldn't reuse them myself no matter how they look. I've kept mine for generic project other though.

I though I'd better update this! A bit more done last summer since the last post, all still stripping down the parts from the GLT scrap yard car and the GLS parts car in preparation for work on the Mk1.

Back in June, after getting the springs off the rear suspension from scrap yaerd car I stripped threm down.

Now to repeat much of the recent posts on the GLS parts!

Had great trouble getting the bolt out, totally seized into the rubber, leading to destruction of the spring mount.

Yes. (3)201761 [Nov 1986] is a 360GLT spring on a quick VIDA check.

Re: JAK 74W Proper Work Finally Started!

Post by Hell Driver » 03 May 2013 12:19 am

Back at the end of January I moved the GLS shell to the yard, still to remove: boot lid, front windscreen and rear bumper. I'll be keeping it for doner body parts and as a source of metal for welding patches. I was going to save the back quarters panels as spares but one side got squashed by a another car being lifted by hiab onto a truck and the other is a welded on replacent which I suspect has a bit of filling.

WORK on JAK 74W FINALLY STARTS!

Reminder of what the car looks like:

In the middle of March I took some photos of the underside of the car.

In preparation for my visit to the MK1 in a breakers yard a couple of weeks ago I decided to make a start on the car in the areas where I thought I would need to get parts for.

FRONT VALANCE

As the front valance has totally disintegrated I decided to start there. Back when I bought the car I was lucky in that I was put in touch by the seller with someone with some NOS parts. I got hold of 2 front valances. I had already realised when I first went to see the car that the problems went a bit further, in fact most of what the front valance is spot welded to has also gone. I was expecting to have to reconstruct this whole back section, not a job I was looking forward to as I'd already done similar job on VFW the 340. This was going to call for some more drastic action and the Mk1 in the breakers was a rare chance to save a lot of work.......

Hi Andy.
Just love the front of your house man.
Why not put the GLS gear box into it. The extra gear
makes a lot of difference. Keep the origional gear stick.
I did it on the banana and its great.
Cheers Mark.

Rust damage under the front bumper, three weeks ago in preparation for a visit to PT Moores.
Image
Image
After deciding how much I need to replace on the car, I went of to PT Moores in Hefefordshire to gather some parts.
My shopping list was:
Front valance (still attached to the front panel as far up as just below the bumper mounting brackets).
This would have the advantage of 1) No fabrication work and 2)all welds would be out of sight and easily hidden behind the bumper where the paint is mat black anyway.
Both Doors I had collected various doors in order to repair the originals which to be honest are beyond easy repair. I'd though I'd never find any with the correct internal trim fitting pattern. Now I have and this should save many hours!
Anything else which I could get my hands on!
Crap phone camera as I forgot to take the proper one.
Image
Image
Image
Image
I also got the bootlid (the original has a bit of rust on the bottom and some dents so again this will save work and time, the window is also free from scratches, JAKs has one or two.)
Bumpers, well a spare set with end caps won't do any harm! Bit of a dent under the front one but not too bad.
I wanted to take the front screen as well but ran out of time and I wasn't quite sure how to get it out.
I took the front panel as well, mainly for the stainless trim around the lights, I didn't have time to get them off so got the lot! Panel has some light dents but would fix up fine.
I took the view that even if I don't need all of it, at least it's now saved from the crusher!

I'm starting to run low on space due to dimantling cars to get part to go on this car! I was lucky a few weeks ago as I managed to get hold of an old post office van body when a neighbour moved house. He had it as a shed, now I have it as a mobile shed!

Image
Image
Now I can start the total dismantling of the car with somewhere to put all the bits!

I never noticed before that early 340's have the anti roll bar mounted further back on the front beam. Does anyone know if the dimensions of the anti roll bar are the same between early and late models?

...because the brackets sit at about 45 degrees, opposed to being vertical on late ones? Do I have that right? If so, I haven't noticed. I almost certainly have a mk1 ARB which can be donated to the cause.

That is exactly what I had spotted. The reason I was asking is if there is to be another run of upgraded bars I want to know if the bars will fit all models or if the early version would be excluded. I would not want to have someone end up with a part that would not fit.

James BTW keep an eye out for the postman

Considering this was going to scrap, it's honestly not that bad. I mean, it needs some work but it's not totally gone. Good to see it getting some progress :D
