Mac! I'm shocked and appalled! Axle stands on the box sections?! Go and administer yourself 30 lashings at once! sm56 sm56 sm56 sm56 sm56 Unless I'm missing something...I'm now full of doubt...Mac is usually infallible...? :?

Amazing thread. Great progress Mac, and thanks again for all you do for the scene.

A couple of quick question on something which had me flailing around the garage in frustration the other week. Firstly...the big shock nut tool...is that a universal tool (if you, do you have a source?), or a Volvo one? Are such things a universal size? I know I've seen specially sized ones before. Secondly, how did you get the top nut (above the top mount) undone? Mine just span the shock tube. I've heard it's usually ok if you do it on the car...or do you have a magic counterhold for the end of the shock rod?

cheers

OMG - found out at last - I am indeed a fraud , if not a worm.

No defence other than box sections are already assulted by years of trolly jacks (and I will plate over the existing crumples)
note also the load spreading timber along the boxes - and the suspension beam is coming off for powder coating.
Had the boxes been perfect I would not have.

I will go and self flagellate immediately!

The strut top nut tool is a "real" one pt.no.9995862 - seems to be 300 specific - top nut on 200/700/900 is a four slot affair.

Piston rod top nut - don't know of a specific counterhold - I use a bloody grut old adjustable wrench.

Much humbled - Mac

Ah, I forgot I hadn't taken micky for this yet... (Foggy rang me at 11 one evening moaning about his being useless and not working it out) I used a offset ring and a 12" AJ for the damper nut. I must admit, my approach for the top nut isn't one I'll admit to in polite company though, I intend to make a Chris' special tool. My new dampers use a special nut however, as the damper piston isn't much smaller in dia to the body (about 2mmish)

Hmmm, now tell me if my memory is wrong, but isn't there place for a spanner so you can keep shock tube on place while undoing top nut? Sure it is 7 years since I did mine, but I'm pretty sure I did use spanner to keep it from rotating. My old dampers had 0 damping effect left, gravity moved piston without resistance at all, ever had that shot dampers and no complains at MOT?

For big nut plummer's toolset comes handy...

edit: I might be old, but still not senile, look, there is place for spanner at top of threaded section:

jup, that space is enough to get the locking bit of the nut loose so you can simply screw it off by then.
some aftermaket shocks (Koni's for example) have a hex side inside the threaded section, that's even easyer as you can get the nut completely off with a tool on it that keeps the shock damper from turning along

For the top-nut counter-hold, I used a big AJ, but it just rounded. The nut was was *bloody* stiff. The only other tool I could have used which I didn't have ready access to was a large set of mole grips. The other suggestion I heard was to slacked it off slightly while it's still on the car. I'm suspicious that I wasn't being a total numpty, and the ones I was working on were super-persistent.

cheers

What I like about group garages is that there is always someone else's carelessly located tools which are perfect for hammering around tight nut by brute force.

I do agree tbh, I've always slackened it off in the car, though I had a set of legs given to me recently that I could'nt do that with and it was actually easier as I could get a big AJ against the concrete, stand on the leg and undo the nut with both hands on the nut spanner rather than trying to stop the AJ
