That would indeed be the one where the photos are from, which is fun despite its missing pages. It's a brochure from Volvo UK to dealers, so written in a different tone to the customer brochure. Here are some photos of the best pages:

I didn't realise that you could still get a brown dashboard in 1978, depending on the colour of the interior upholstery.

Even though it's a UK brochure, I have a feeling that from the shape of the mirrors and the headlamp wipers that it's Swedish spec.

+1 Thanks Sion for the interesting brochure scans.

I don't have an instrument panel with "yellow warning light symbols".

I like the "Opening angle increased to accommodate pipe/cigar." feature of the new ashtray.

How interesting, no you don't on looking at your pictures. Yours is the only '78 car I have pictures of which doesn't have the yellow symbols. I wonder if yours is late in the model year and they changed them slightly?

I shall pull the panel forwards at some point and see if there's a date code to be seen.

The instrument cluster with the yellow symbols should have been standard on a MY78 car. Check out this old Ebay ad, for a German Black Beauty (DL-C) which came up for sale last summer:
http://www.ebay.de/itm/150825034833

The sports steering wheel is missing from the UK brochure, although the interior pics are probably from a standard model.

Re: MY78 343DL Black Beauty - Bad vibrations

Post by macplaxton » 24 Apr 2013 03:57 pm

Well bad vibrations slowed progress home, but I got home.

I was suspecting the belts wanted peeking at as things weren't sounding sweet from the rear. On the way home from work this afternoon, the vibration got worse (I'd notice the odd tooth disappear behind me in my rear view mirror. I was waiting for the bang, a bang that never happened. The belt just slowed unravelled. Then smoothness again. No explosion, no drama. Trundled on to a petrol station and recovered the remnants of the dead belt. Nice and easy. Made my way home.

That's a "tomorrow" job as I'm working again in 8 hours or so. Need some kip. Citroen hasn't been used in months, but started okay when I got back, so we'll see if rumbly wheel bearing and slippy clutch gets me to work and back later. :|

Oh dear, I hope it's just a worn belt. How does the car perform on a single belt?

Well, didn't play any roulette in going to the shops or anything, but did get myself into overalls and under the car to do some belts. Ended up doing a bit more, but I'll have to sort out the pictures first. So expect me to have something proper posted soon.

Quick update on the previous Sunday's work.

Now this is the dead belt:
Image
DSCF6781.JPG by macplaxton, on Flickr
Not overly worn on the shoulders though.
Image
DSCF6778.JPG by macplaxton, on Flickr
Started off losing a few teeth.
Image
DSCF6779.JPG by macplaxton, on Flickr
Then kind of unravelled.
Image
DSCF6780.JPG by macplaxton, on Flickr
Then went to sleep.

These are the belts/transmission from ----JGT (ex-VND, ex JPB, ex WP) and since the swap into the BB, they have done just shy of 10k miles, but I'm not sure what they've done in total.

In with the Volvo belts

This batch from Mexico rather than the US of A.
Image

Dead easy to get the remaining old belt off and fit the new ones. (well it is with the jumbo G-clamp aka Volvo special tool: 5837)
Image
DSCF6792.JPG by macplaxton, on Flickr
Pulleys are rather nice on this unit.

Wee man providing security. Not helping much though. Must get round to putting that Pug back together and tested. Mrs P not very happy as it's been off the road for some time... No garage, but reasonable sized shed. Corner plot is handy as the back yard is fleet friendly. Always a winner when looking for a place to rent.
Image

And I even found time after doing all that to pull the winter steelies off and get the summer rubber on. Off came the Vredestein Snowtrac 3's and on with the Maxxis? WTF! It may have Maxxis on the sidewall in big letters, but I know they are Cheng Shin Rubber Co's finest. Us motorcyclists of a certain age, may remember this brand of tyres as "chin shiners"
Image

Fitted by a tyre fitted that couldn't be arsed lining up his lightest point dots with the valves. It's not hard, this was one of the better ones. The worse had it on the far side.
Image
DSCF6805.JPG by macplaxton, on Flickr
Anyway, I'm going to have a go and wearing them out, although I may just give in and get some Michelins on the GT rims sooner rather than later. I'll see if I find some time on Friday to pick up a felgenbaum.

I didn't get round to changing the fuel filter, but on the way to work on Monday it was running poorly again. Before driving home I quickly dismantled the carburettor far enough to clean all the jets and tubes. Despite the float chamber being cleaned thoroughly six or seven hundred miles ago, there was some very fine stuff in there. Very fine to get past the in-line filters. :? Must bring forward that fuel tank replacement job...

Good work! I bet the BB looks great on those rims ...

The belts should last you a while longer now.

Re: MY78 343DL Black Beauty - Exhausted

Post by macplaxton » 25 Oct 2013 09:11 pm

Well I suppose I ought to do some sort of update.

Recently it became time to do something about the front and rear of the exhaust, they were both rather rusty and the exhaust was leaking from the downpipe to middle section joint where it was rather crusty-rusty. The middle section had been replaced on the 2011 holiday as the silencer there had a hole in it.

Now sometime around Dec 2011, I had bought an early downpipe to fit, but I rejected doing the job at the time on the basis that the studs would shear. So it was all put on the back burner...until now

The downpipe to manifold studs were double-nutted. On the first two studs, the outer nuts moved with some persuasion. Then upon attacking the main nuts, the studs decided to shear flush with the downpipe flange. On the last stud, the outer nut sheared the stud flush with the inner nut. I bottled it at that point and used the car for a couple more days until I brought reinforcements in....

Image
DSCF6942.JPG by macplaxton, on Flickr

The M10 stud and cone lock nut on the left is for a later B14 manifold where the manifold/downpipe flange points rearward. The early B14 manifolds uses M8 studs and the manifold/downpipe flange points forwards. Gaskets are different.

Armed up, the last stud was sheared off and the manifold removed from the head. (As you can see a few hoses have to be popped off the transfer pipe and the carburettor heated flange).

Image
DSCF6949.JPG by macplaxton, on Flickr

Notes: Manifold to downpipe flange has three M8 x 1.25 studs. The starter motor heat shield has two M8 x 1.25 studs (stainless steel, not sure if original, but maybe it was until the bean counters found out). The manifold to hot air tube/plate has three M7 x 1.00 studs holding it on. The inlet manifold is bolted to two M7 x 1.00 studs on the top of the exhaust manifold (at least these ones undo easily) The rest can/will be a pain). The manifold has a Renault part number in the casting - 77 00 597 631.

After that it was off to the shed to get the three busted studs out by welding some M10 nuts onto the remnants. This was a bit fruitless as whilst the welds were okayish, they were no match for the stuckness in the cast iron. No amount of brute force or penetrating spray stuff could move these. It needed heat and lots of it. Forget butane, more time was wasted getting something hotter.

Image
DSCF6951.JPG by macplaxton, on Flickr

This gas axe ,in combination with welding some nuts on the broken studs, managed to get somewhere at last.

Image
DSCF6950.JPG by macplaxton, on Flickr

Two out, one to go. It also made light work of shifting the other five rusty nuts.

Image
DSCF6952.JPG by macplaxton, on Flickr

I had to clean up the threads in the manifold/downpipe stud holes with a tap and used a die on the M8 starter heat shield threads. Left those studs where they were so I wasn't creating too much work for myself. Left the manifold to hot air tube/plate off until I feel the urge to fabricate something up to fix the rusted off corner. Used brass M8 nuts on the five M8 studs.

Mounted the inlet and exhaust manifolds back on the head and struck a problem. Despite having the car up in the air, the downpipe wouldn't come out. Checked this thread... http://www.volvo300mania.com/forum-uk/v ... =2&t=11797 , removed the manifolds again and plucked it out through the top instead.

I had trouble getting the mid section to slide onto the end of the downpipe, so without a pipe expander, I started bashing away with a 30mm socket to try and take the pinch out. This was mildly successful, and I was able to get a gas-tight seal. However, the exhaust was now a bit far back (previously it had been too far forward in order to get a seal), but it was good enough for the meantime. It was vibrating against the tow bar though.
