Gold 360 GLS XKW

Post by Hell Driver » 14 Jul 2013 11:20 pm

Some on here may remember my 'saving' of this car last autumn, with a view to finding it a more suitable home that the banger track etc.

viewtopic.php?f=8&t=13933

Well so much for selling it.......I didn't try too hard!

Here's the background of how I came to get the car.

viewtopic.php?f=83&t=7735&start=45

3 years later the owner decided to stop driving due to not using the car enough to justify the cost. My chance meeting resulted in being offered the chance to buy the car. I have a more of a liking for 3 doors but after seeing it again I couldn't resist! Had it been a 1.4/1.7 and a later model I think I would have passed on it though. Somehow the B19 Mk2 just slipped through the net and I soon found myself with another one!

I had to quickly find a garage to keep it in as although garaged all it's life, the car has seen all year use and is a little crusty in places so I didn't want it outside. Apart from a quick test drive around town and a new M.O.T. the car sat for 9 months in a relatives garage while in theory I was finding a new long term owner.

In mid June this year I decided that I must get to get the car back on the road as it's M.O.T. was being wasted and the cam belt needed to be changed before I could even think of driving it anywhere or selling it. So, I was fleeced £225 for 12 months tax and got the car out ready to do the belt.

By the way, this is now my only 300 on the road at the moment, the GL is M.O.T.ed and insured but the tax ran out at the end of May and it's now garaged where the 360 was. The green 360 is still awaiting M.O.T and tax.

With the V.O.C. B.K.V. coming up I decided to try to get the car ready in time to take it.

As the coolant was more rust than water I decieded to take the radiator off anyway to do the timing belt, the alternator/fan belts also needed changing.

The car came with a pair of original Volvo fan belts but as they may be fairly old, I put some newer ones on.

Very badly cracked/inflexible old fanbelt!

The original cam belt.

New fan belt, cam belt and tensioner on.

The journey down went fine apart from the wipers coming on and staying on for no reason! After some miles of squirting water on the screen and pretending to wash it  I had to pull off the M1 and pull the conection off the motor to stop them. I found that you can hold them in an off position if you get the stalk right but it's tricky! I still have to fix this but they still work when needed in another speed position. I noticed that when driving around town the front brakes bind very slightly and as I pulled onto the show field this didn't go un-noticed!

At the B.K.V. Jack likes this car as has his own doors at the back! In the 3 doors he sits in the front.

I've done a few more miles since the B.K.V. A run to Chesterfield and back highlighted the binding brakes, they became really bad around town and hot weather. (although fine on the motorway once they had worn down and cooled off a bit!).

Today I had a look at the problem:

After going to battle with the old stainless covered wheel nuts! (thats how I found that one!)
Image

Rust and lack of copper grease where the pads slide.

I put the luc luc alloys on I got from Theo a couple of years ago. The tyres are a little old but good quality (Michelin and Pirelli) front low on tread but back very good. They are a bit dirty and really need repainting but that kind of fits in with the 'untouched' look of the car.

Went for a long test run this evening and the brakes are fine now. Had a few problems with the rear light bulb holders (indicator) ,the usual problems with poor contacts, easily sorted out.

Thanks to Speedy, I now have a towbar to fit. The GL might have a rest from towing the caravan this year. The GLS is more suited to towing.

Should the belts not be 11.9mm width? Probably not cause any problems on the 360 TBH, but my 940 doesn't like 10mm belts on the power steering.

There's a certain honesty about this car which I really like. Andy - you are officially addicted! Looks great on the alloys, very fitting :)

Indeed - a bit scabby around the edges, slightly battered, but basically ok and runs great. Just like my first GLS.....

It does look great on those alloys!

I'm glad to see a thread about this car, I hadn't realised you'd had wiper gremlins on the way to the BKV.

As I said to you when I saw it in the flesh, I agree with the other comments that somehow this car looks very honest and original.

You do have rather a lot of 300s though...!!

Thanks for the comments....

Regarding the belts, didn't realise they were different, ok so far, will keep an eye on them.

Yes I do have 1 or 2 now! Must admit I do like the 360 GLS's the best now having driven most of the others (except the GLT)

I agree, that engine with the Strom is lovely, just could do with a tad less flywheel. By far the best standard 300 to drive though.

Is that what gives the slight delay as you put your foot down hard before the power kind of builds up?

Have you checked the carb dashpot oil? That will cause slow acceleration

The heavy flywheel makes it slow to rev up, but makes for a torquey relaxing drive.

Hesitation is most probably low dashpot oil or a split diaphragm in the carb.
