Good condition those, painting is a very good idea to insulate the aluminium from the steel cased bushes. Galvanic corrosion really wastes away the bracket. I need to find a solution to rebuild these...next project.

There was a good bit of exactly that. You can see it in the top right of the one in the foreground. It had grown more than worn away. I cleaned it up as best I could with the wire wheel.
That paint is special metal primer. I'll be coating them in hammerite and putting a bead of silicon between that and the steel inserts. Steel will be painted too. The rubber bushings are no longer attached to the steel so I will have to see how they will work but they should be ok I think.

I keep an eye on his thread. Sterling work on the body. I haven't even started on that yet. Just ordered a new sill today since I am getting close to getting her back on the road. Just need to finish painting gearbox mounts, make 3 new brake pipes and fit everything back on the car. Bit of fettling then she is off to have the new sill fitted and the rear wheel arch sorted and I am good to go.

I'd love to have a go at doing the body myself but I have yet to teach myself how to weld. I have a nice welder but I've never used it. I'm paying a fella I know to do what is needed at the minute. Then I can start building the new engine. After that I will be learning to weld.

I'm aiming for next weekend to have her driving. Exciting times! 8)

I don't think they need super painted like steel needs to be to stop rust, I had primer on a new one and it came of the car mint, although I'm not sure how long it was on. Going to try Al Mig welding.

Anyway mine is just off to the sprayers last week, may take a bit longer to rebuild.

Had a big push at the weekend, refitted everything to the car. Now the issues. Turns out the springs were fitted the wrong way round when I bought the car. This would account for the broken shock it had, of course, I measured and took note of how everything came off and refitted everything the same way. Now I have to pull the axle again and turn the bloody springs around. One rear wheel has play in the new bearing! Not sure why so I bought a new bearing today as I will more than likely destroy the one on the car when I pull the stub. Meh!
Was waiting for my left threaded nuts for my torque rod, 3 are left thread, one is not. Have to wait for that to come now. Anyway, got the front in the air at the moment as I get the wheels in my rust dip and then paint them, new tyres etc.

Hope to be driving this after next weekend. sm4 Then the new sill and I can start building my engine. :D

Still hate that bloody gearbox, putting that behemoth in the car on my own still sends shivers up my spine!

Busy day today, stripped the front hubs again to sort out two knackered studs, fitted calipers and pads and put the replaced speedo cable in. It won't clip into the speedo end but I think it is going to work. Wouldn't fit in the new adaptor either but I managed to get it working with the old one. Will see how it goes. Fitted new stake nuts, twice, after staking them the first time I realised I had backed them off 180 instead of 90 degrees. Thanks Mac. Those nuts you sent me are not made of chocolate like the ones I got with the bearings.

This is back on the garage floor!

Mainly due to the springs being on back to front, now sorted.

Don't recall where I sourced this bearing but it is no good, there was play in the wheel and when I removed it it has broken up. Now have a new one in place and all is well.

Wheels are painted and Dunlop street response fitted. They look much better than the pic suggests, I blame my phone and poor light plus the tyre paste all over them. :?

Image

Tomorrow I have to try to manouver the petrol tank out of the way so I can recover the bolt for the radius arm. I left it in the chassis so I would remember where it went, the wrong way round! Now I can't get it out as it fouls the tank. Then just have to remove the new handbrake cable I fitted that is too short. I'll put the old one in for now.

New heater resistor that Mac built is fitted. Sill is somewhere on the way from Poland. Should have it next week, time to book the ferry to import the car! Vrt to pay and it should sail the NCT when the new sill is fitted.

Just a small dent in the bonnet and a large one in the passenger rear door to sort after that, plus 2 new boot struts, bonnet to soundproof, interior to tidy and sound deaden, (I hate rattles) computer and sound system to fit, B230et to build....... :360:

Quick question, when I removed the old cable I had to disconnect a ground strap that someone had put on it. They had cut the insulation on the speedo cable and wrapped a bit of wire to it that grounds at the bonnet catch. This was wrapped in insulation tape. Is this necessary? It looked like a bodge but I'm guessing there must be a reason?

Well, seems the springs were on correctly the first time around. This is what I have now.

Looks like I have a serious issue. The springs I have are stamped with part number 296080. The part is listed in the catalogue as 3296080. There is a note next to it saying CVT excl. GLT
There are 2 different part numbers for the MT. 3296079 and 3201759.

My issue is that the coilovers are too short. I thought the springs were back to front, they weren't. Going to try one more time with them on the right way but I suspect I have the wrong springs on this car. Can anyone advise to differences?
Cheers.

OK, no closer to understanding why they wouldn't fit the first time around.

They fit now though! sm4
