Re: Hello. (New member) I brought pics!
Still have them Dai, they're in a bag with the bolts. Just started putting the rear axle back together, bearings and shafts, backplates are all together. Should have my new cylinders and shoes next week, tomorrow I will be installing springs, lowering blocks and coilovers. Making new brake pipes. Radius arm is derusted and ready to be cut and tapped for adjustability. Rear wheels are painted with new tyres.
My block and pistons should be landing on Monday but they are getting put to one side for now. Cracking on....

Re: Hello. (New member) I brought pics!
Most of the axle is now together. Waiting for shoes and cylinders. Found 1 I had bought before and that's fitted.
Ran the new brake lines.
Lowering blocks are in.
Got my new block and bits today. All looks good. Have new ties for my cv boots and am collecting a torque tube on Friday so I can try to rebuild the one I have with the dodgy bearing. Will be replacing the whole brake line front to rear while the torque tube is out. Gearbox is coming along. Diff is a bugger to clean though. Hope to be on the road in a few weeks.

The pleasure was all mine sir! Sorry I made you miss the Netherlands goal, sounds like there was plenty more after I left though! It would be the game that I missed that threw up the shock, still recovering from the drive, 500 miles round trip. I'm feeling my age!
The good news is that the tube you gave me does not make the strange vibrating sound that my own one does when I move it around. I reckon this one is good to go and the one I have on the car will be getting pulled to bits for an attempted rebuild. Hopefully I will be able to return a refurbished one to you some time in the future.
Loved the banana, jealous of the colour, much nicer than my brown. Plus all the options you could dream of. Love the louvre. Hopefully when I get the car on the road we can organise a Volvo meet somewhere central. Would be good to meet without having to rush back.
Thanks again. Especially for taking the time to paint the tube. I'm well on my way to being back on the road.
Re: Hello. (New member) I brought pics!
No updates for a while. I was away for a week in Poland leaving the kids to their grandparents for the summer holidays. Now I should have more time for the car but I have to admit I have been procrastinating a bit these last few weeks. Been dreading removing the new exhaust to get at the torque tube. Finally went at it this morning and thank god it won't need cutting but my arm has swollen up like a balloon with a cramp in my forearm.
Big push now in the next month to get this on the road.

Re: Hello. (New member) I brought pics!
Right, got the exhaust off after much cursing and bleeding of knuckles, then set about getting out the torque tube. Trying to do this with the back end up on jackstands and the front just sitting on the lowered suspension was not the best way to go about it but I got there in the end. Managed to wedge my head a few times though.
I went to the replacement torque tube to check for differences and noticed there is no play in the quill in the replacement but play in both ends of the origional one, then noticed the splines at the front of the replacement are a bit chewed up. Probably ok for the B19a but not a hope of lasting when I put the B230 in her.
I set about taking out the quill from the one with the bad bearings, tapped it up with a bit of 2x4 and a lump hammer until it reached the rear bearing then used a bit of threaded bar to knock it through. I could then pull it out easily from the front. Did the same with the replacement, much, much harder to remove, there was no way it was pulling out after clearing the rear bearing so I extended my threaded bar and carried on tapping.
This would only reach as far as the center bearing but then it was a bit easier to pull out, note to anyone trying this, do not as I did, jamb the torque tube against a bit of concrete and pull with your legs open. You will get a blow in the crotch to remember when it comes free!
So, after much rolling around like a certain Netherlands player we shall not name and much cursing, I have two tubes seperated from 2 quills. This picture is from before the 2nd one was removed.
Now I can look inside I have identified the bearings as INA bearing 6005z. These are about 4 quid each. They are pressed into the bearing housing which interestingly has an INA number on it I have not been able to find online. YZA F-58114, there is also a plastic insert that reduces the bearing inner diameter from 25mm to 20mm. I will be pulling these assemblies out next weekend to replace the bearings and inspect the sleeves for wear.

OK. I have the innards pulled from the torque tube, bloody hell that was a long day!
I am starting a new thread just for the torque tube, you can view it here.

Fantastic work going into this, it's almost a shame to hide that shiny rear axle under the car

Re: Hello. (New member) I brought pics!
Thanks for the support guys, it goes a long way on the dark days!
Torque tube is coming along, first bearing replaced and ready to go back in the tube. Have left hand threaded bar on the way to make my torque rod adjustable, stupidly brayed in the threaded inserts with a hammer till flush, they are a tight fit and so I am going ahead without welding. (mainly because there is no chance of getting them out again)
Getting Dais' polybushes for the torque rod and a new set of handbrake cables. Now hoping for nice weather this weekend to get under the car to clean and underseal. Still lots to do.

Re: Hello. (New member) I brought pics!
try gently run a grinder round the edge of the tube to create the space to put a fillet of weld around the inserts. as soon as the bar goes into tension with the weight of the axle on it those inserts will pop straight out
ive just fitted my polybushed arms this week and theyre a great improvement, the new ball joints and good secondhand top mounts have vastly eased the steering effort required and the whole front end feels much tighter as a result ... just need some better damper and springs but itll do for now
this is great thread, im thoroughly enjoying it. keep up the stellar work

At the very least, drill the tube from the side and plug weld. It may seem like its never comming out but you cannot use friction to hold something against an axial force like that. If there is enough force you will weaken the tube. A threaded bar and suspension forces are exactly how you would remove such a thing.

I just did the stone chip on mine, watch the edge if you are doing the sills etc, the masking tape may pull the stonechip off the wanted parts. Remove it as soon as possible, ie when wet, or be prepared to cut it off.
