Introducing Fjölnir the 360GLT

Post by jamesinc » 12 Jun 2014 05:18 am

Hi everyone!

I run the Australian Volvo forums, Oz Volvo, and recently acquired my first '85 360GLT :360: as a project car to rally. I paid $400 and it has 6 weeks of rego left on it, so for now I'm just driving it day-to-day to build up a relationship with the car. As it's stock standard for the time being I thought I'd post here instead of the projects category.

The car is generally pretty good; the interior is all intact, but it has a list of hilarious little things that keep me entertained:
  • If you give it too much jandal at the lights, the head unit falls out
  • All tail lights work at their leisure only
  • Occasionally one of the cylinders doesn't fire at low RPM
  • The paint on the roof and bonnet sucks
  • The fuel pump (according to the seller) is on its way out
  • The clutch and gearbox are surprisingly tip-top!
My work list is:
  • Replace head unit and actually bolt this one in
  • Bend all the bulb pins so the lights are a bit more consistent
  • Replace the oil, coolant, spark plugs, leads, rotor and cap, check the grounds
  • Replace the gearbox fluid and diff fluid
  • Replace the tyres with some road-legal rally tyres
  • Investigate power-steering conversion
Other than that I love the damn thing. Handling is great and it has decent torque. Further down the line once I start rallying it, I may swap out the B200 for a B230 and fun Megasquirt with a decent head and camshaft.

I need to take more pictures, but here's two I took last weekend:

Looks and sounds pretty nice.

I was going to use a vauxhall corsa (holden barina) Electric power steering column. Standard manual rack can be used and just the coumn needs to be modified. Well worth a look. Much more efficient than standard power steering :)
