I see EFE beige! Just a question of sunshine and camera exposition? :D Do you still have the paint code from the VIN plate?
I'll ask Bob or John. It's down on the VRC as yellow, but then it all depends on the dealer registering it what they put the basic colour down as. The official list is: beige, black, blue, bronze, brown, buff, cream, gold, green, grey, ivory, maroon, orange,
pink, purple, red, silver, turquoise, white and yellow.

It looks like buff to me...

That picture of EFE definitely makes it look more beige than it was. I'd vote for it being 'buff' coloured too. I think that this colour had been phased out in the 83 model year anyway... maybe. I can't recall any 83 cars with the later dash in the same colour.

It's definitely speculation at this stage but I reckon the valance got replaced at some point early on in the cars life with one without fog light cut outs. In one of the pictures there seems to be quite a few stone chips also (or is it just dirt??), given the mileage isn't that high could it be poor paint compared to factory?

What a find!
I came across a similar car (same color as well) in 1994 on the local breaker's yard.
At first I tought it was a Diesel car (hence the fog light holes in the front and 5 speed transmission).
But the license plate indicated it was a MY83 (so no Diesel) the plain colour could not be a real 360, as I recall these were mostly metallic painted.
A quick look under the bonnet revealed the B19A engine.
Later on I fould out the 340 DL 2.0 was shortly delivered since september 1982, my collection of dutch motor magazines proved to be helpfull. Probably intended for those who wanted the 2 liter engine but could do without the luxury, or used to have the 343/345 DLS's. Or pricewise an alternative for competitors with 2 liter engines.

Very rare indeed!

Ah, that's very interesting! Do happen to know which magazine, and which month?

I'll dig them up from the attic.
Since I must have every weekly issue of them ('82 till '85) and since they printed the pricelists of the available new cars back then, it can be sorted out how long the "economy 2 liters" were sold.

It must be "Autokampioen" or "Autovisie".
Collected quite some of them with interesting Volvo items.
Some of my "older" scans are available on the Dutch V3C site.

Autokampioen no.41 dated October 15th 1982; it is a test review of the 360 GLT, but pricelist shows 340 DL 2.0.

Also the dutch Brochure of september 1982 states the 340 DL 2.0 in the technical specs:

But I also found a special dealer issued advertising paper with a even more detailed price listing:

Thus beeing standard with a 4 speed transmission and at an additional fl 740,00 available with the 5 speed:

(sorry for the blurry picture)
If appreciated I could get some PDF-scans of the booklet shown above?

Thanks for sharing that info, Freerk ... I went through all the available Autokampioen and Autovisie on Marktplaats the other day but couldn't make out from the cover which would be the right one.

I'm sure Aymat or the V3C would appreciate a PDF. Autokampioen No 41 available on Marktplaats and on Ebay:
http://www.ebay.de/itm/1982-AUTOKAMPIOE ... 1369415749
http://www.marktplaats.nl/a/boeken/auto ... coupe.html
http://www.marktplaats.nl/a/boeken/auto ... -1982.html

So it really looks like the 340 DL (B19) is a kind of follow on model from the 343 DLS. Unusual, since the DLS was discontiued early on in the 82 model year, it looks like they had another go selling a "bargain basement" B19 car for 1983!

Here's a blurry pic from the Belgian (Dutch) brochure from 1983:
Image

B19A engine as an option for the 340 DL, equipment same as the standard 340 DL except

Halogen headlamps
Rev counter (not on Duvel's car for some reason)
175/70 SR13 tyres
CVT not available

In the members section of the V3C there's also a scan of "Autotheek" magazine, Issue 8 from January 1983 (which I won't post here). The 340 DL B19A is listed there too, as in Freerk's scan.

Love this detective work ;-)

Cheers

Me too!!

Excellent work, thanks Freerk and Tom for your investigation, I've learned a lot.

I never realized before the discreet "340 DL B19A" in the official Volvo documentation... Maybe a car for those who wanted a basic 340 but allergic to the idea of having a Renault engine?

That's funny, I have the same brochure for MY83 but another version, no rev counter for the 340 DL B19 this time...

You're right. My brochure was Dutch/Belgian maybe your one is Dutch/Netherlands? AFAIK "340 Winner" was Dutch (Nederland) only.

So maybe ... your car was originally sold in Holland and made it's way over to Belgium at a later date.

Another funny difference between the "Belgium" version and the "Netherlands" 340 DL:

In the Belgiun brochure (trabitom99) the 340 DL could be ordered with an M47R 5 speed transmission, on both 1.4 and 2.0 liter.
The Netherlands version (Duvel78) it is only optional on the 2.0 liter version.

Also another funny discrepancy with the "Belgian" 340 Luxe: it has only a "tunnelbak" (storage space in front of the gearlever) and not "centrale console met ruimte voor radio" (extended storage space incl. radio mount)
This would mean the dashboard configuration till MY82, as from MY83 all 340/360 had the newer style, thus including integrated space for the radio.
OR would the remainder of the "older" styled dashboards be used up for the Belgian customers, actual a 82's 343 L with the 83's 340 L badge??

DAF did the same with the 55: after the introduction of the 66, the older stock of 55's were long available in Belgium, even with the newer plate clutch as in the DAF 66.

I also have different copies of this Brochure, I'll check which versions I have.

Really love this investigation too :D

Well spotted Freerck. That really wouldn't surprise me at all. So a Belgian 340 L was basically just the same car from the previous year, just with a different badge.

I've noticed that a few times too. Steering wheels, different design for the heater box in the engine bay ... the basic models seemed to have to use up the old stocks before getting the "new stuff".

Cheers

... or a good towing car, or a good mile-eater for the motorways ... I really like the idea actually, a car with little in the way of equipment but a big engine has always appealed to me :-)

And even all these "Winners" were not originally produced in the factory, but "customised" by the Dutch importer in Beesd.
So they removed: the cigarette lighter + ashtray light, parcel shelf, reverselights (bulbs only!), side guard rubbers, O/S mirror & rear foglight (bulb only).
In practice these "Winners" were more expensive than the 340 L, due to the extra labour, to built. And they actually sold quite a lot of these "sales-enhancing" models, for a HFL 985,00 less!

I did own a MY'83 340 Winner some decade ago, and loved the basic equipment. It did not have to be GLS or GLE specs for me.
