Another one back on the road to annoy the modern motoring public

Passed with a 3 advisories, stone chip in the windsceen, very slight play in the offside track rod end and something about the use of underseal :P

Finished work on the car at midnight last night!

Got a shock at the post office, £205 now for a 1.7, robbing B******S, I paid £190 for the GLS in March, they put it up in April, lucky i did that one just in time! Looks like I'll be taking them both off the road for a few months over winter to recoup some cash

The car drives well after it's 8 years in suspended animation. I have done quite a lot or work to it since may last proper post,

paint welded box sections near fuel tank
repainted fuel tank and refit
replaced some perished fuel tank hoses and clips
painted very rusty rear axle
changed rear diff oil
changed gearbox oil
replaced both rear brake cylinders
freed up jammed hand brake mechanisms and adjusted
new pads and shoes
cleaned up front calipers
removed and cleaned up (old) but very good brake pipes to rear and across rear axle
2 new lower front brake pipes
new flexi-hoses all round
blead full brake system, new fluid
new (standard) rear shocks
new rear silencer
finished welding floorpan rust
painted all floor pan sill welding areas
replaced split rubber boot on nearside track rod end
fitted new foglights to front valance (still to wire up)
filled door pillar rust hole and painted
repaired flaking paint previous repair on nearside wing
cleaned up front wheel arches rust, filler and painted
welder small inner arch rust hole and painted
replaced drivers seat belt (old one very fluffy!)
put interior and seats back in and quick valet
fixed blocked windscreen wash jet
fitted new wiper blades
fitted different wheels with a new set of tyres

Now I just need a few nights out of the garage. The Mk 1 is in there now over the pit what a mess!!! Thats enough to put me off for a few months :D

Pretty good really, the caravan looks big for the car but it's fairly lightweight, gross laden weight of 900kgs. We had a bit of snaking when we joined the A1 due to lots of overtaking trucks and a crosswind, it was very busy on friday when we set off. Once we got bit further north it was much better. We did about 50mph most of the way there, slowing to about 45 on some of the hills on the A66. We could have gone quicker but fuel consumption would have gone up! You certainly use the gears a lot more even on the fast roads, I'd say 55 to 60 would be possible without thrashing it too much, we did try 55+ on the A1 home and it felt fine. The engine didn't sound strained, although some of the hills on the 66 required 4th and more revs! I might look at getting a stabilizer to make driving in windy conditions feel
safer.
Only one hiccup, when we stopped at Penrith and turned the engine off it ran on and backfired in Morrisons car park  . When I restarted it, it ran badly. Quick look under the bonnet to find the vacuum pipe to the brake servo had blown off along with the breather hose.
From my calculations we managed 21.5 mpg, not brilliant, as I once managed 30 mpg with the old 1.4 cvt a long time ago. We did get stuck behind a sub 10 mph gypsy caravan (1 horse power type  ) on the A66 for 3 miles which didn't help, thanks to the Applebey Horse Fair
