Wow Rich, thanks for the info ...
Green book has 0.7mm gap and tightening torque of 25Nm screw thread not oiled
Checked the gap and it was OK, tightened up to green book specs of course :-) I'm getting to like all this NM-nerdiness.

BPR6ES are the ones I've fitted (the Skandix standard delivery for my make/model/engine selection ...)

Rather than trying to suss out what HT leads should have been fitted from factory, I've now just fitted the SAE adapter to the plugs again, removed all the old leads (except for the king lead from distributor to dizzy cap) and fitted a new set of Bosch leads which I still had in my parts box:

Image

Parts fitted last night:

Bosch HT leads B890 (0 986 356 890)
Volvo 1306169 contact breaker points (Ebay)
Volvo 243903 rotor (Ebay)

not fitted because it broke when I took it out of the packet!

Volvo 243797 dizzy cap (Ebay)

... and not in the picture: a new condensation trap for the distributor:

Volvo 1336242 (in theory for the B19E, but still available from Volvo Classic Parts for 4.31€)

First time I've ever witnessed the changing of contact breaker points, I think once you've done it once it's not so hard even with basic mechanical knowledge. You need to have some feeler blades and a tester though.

Image

Replace points
Put the car in 3rd gear, and push forwards till the highest point of one of the four cams on the rotor arm shaft has pushed the lug of the contact breaker points to its furthest point.
Set the gap to 0.45mm using a screwdriver to gently push the points into position
Connect up the tester and adjust accordingly.

The dwell angle needs to be between 59° and 65°, we managed to get it spot on :-)

Image

All over in about 20 mins.

To be continued ... but not in the next few evenings, now the family needs some attention ;-)

That's probably enough actually :-) The extremes were 40° - 70° IIRC and I didn't notice any difference in how the engine was running. But I don't have much experience in these things ...

It'll do when your stuck somewhere late without feeler gauges to get going again. :D

Either that or eyeball gauge.

Nice work Tom! Really enjoying reading this. Out of interested how did you find the gearbox plugs to remove, were they a massive pain?

Hi Steve!

The drainage plugs were definitely easier to remove than the filler plugs: so it's really important to make sure you're able to open the filler plugs before draining any oil out

I wouldn't say "a massive pain" but it took a lot of strength, and we had to raise the car up to get better access.

Re: '82 343 DLS Service Day 4: clock fitted

Post by trabitom99 » 02 Nov 2015 09:47 am

Another long evening's work on Friday night ...

First: checked the ignition timing. It took a while to locate the mark on the flywheel (used tippex so we could see it better), and you need to remove the long tube which leads to the "heat collector" above the exhaust manifold.

10° at idle speed: all OK.

Image

Then on to the clock. I didn't think it would take so long to remove the instrument panel - it all seems so much easier on my later 360s with VDO gauge panels ... What took longest was removing the speedo cable - on VDO speedos all you have to do is turn the knurled fitting screw (not quite sure how to describe it, it usually breaks and that was why I was particularly careful here ...) but on this early dash the Smiths cable is additionally secured with a whole load of chewing-gum type gunk:

Image
Image

Once all the black stuff is off, you push that snap-fit grey lug inwards, and the cable comes off quite easily.

Out with the dash (the long cable is for the clock adjustment):

Image

... remove the screws separating the two halves of the instrument panel:

Image

The clock from Mark/Rich on the left, the removed (non-working) one on the right:

Image

Before fitting it back, we tied up some of the loose cables with cable ties, they were snagging the drivers' side heater / air control cables which meant "DEF" was permanently on - all working nicely now:

Image

And all back in, holding my breath after connecting the battery back up again ...

Image

... and the clock is working nicely! Many thanks again, Mark and Rich :-) I'll get the non-working one packed off back to you as soon as I can.

Two things aren't quite so good - I'm not sure where this brown cable came from (on this pic between the steering column and the mounting for the clock adjuster cable). We searched for any missing spade connectors, but couldn't find any. The only think I could thing of was that it could have come from the blower switch (it only work's on "3", but I'm guessing that's the usual resistor pack problem) but at 11pm I couldn't face taking that part of the facia panel out as well ...

Image

Another thing, since the instrument swap, the petrol gauge appears to have become slightly sticky. I'll have to watch that: definitely a good excuse for another test run ... this Saturday?

yes, those are earth.
might be from the horn but there usually hangs a wire just loose as a spare around that area

i'm interested in what's wrong with the old clock, the one in my 343 (also DLS/GLS clockset) doesn't work aswell; also missing the adjuster cable but that's another problem (or if someone has a spare... :P )

OK thanks guys ... Spare sounds likely, searched the whole area for a while with a torch and couldn't find a likely candidate for the other end. The horn sounds possible though, pretty much the only electrical thing I didn't check (not so good at 11pm in a residential area ...)

I'll get the non-working clock packed up and posted back to you Rich.

Cheers

No rush for the clock - hold on for now in case another parcel needs to be made up ;)

I'd attach the brown things back to the body (and see if the gauge is less sticky??)

Is the voltage stabiliser thingy is sound and making good contact?

Hmmm ... all good hints. I'll have another look at it all - I plan to take the instrument panel out again anyway to replace some of the bulbs. Just checked the part no:

942327 (12V 1.2W) also fitted to the "standard" L/DL dash, as well as to the later 1983/1984 Smiths gauge panel. Available from Skandix, Volvo ... and probably several other places too.

Cheers

Those bulbs? Bog standard stuff from the car parts store. Capless things that push into those holders.

ETA: 286 bulbs. (12v 1.2W capless)

And they're not fixed to the holders in any way? I'm guessing not, IIRC Rainer swapped some on my 1980 vario at some point ...

On a VDO dash they seem to be attached to the socket.

Cheers

Apologies, thinking about those early Smiths dashes up to c. 1980 with the push in holders, the twist in holders with bulbs attached are:

12V 1.2W BX8.4d
