Thanks Mark! It's all simple stuff compared with some of the amazing work done by other people on this forum, but it shows what kind of jobs you can do with limited mechanical skill and lots of forum help :-)

I'll get the clock sent out to Rich by this weekend at the latest.

Only just noticing most of my dash (instruments are ok) bulbs seem to not be working..Mk3

Pretty sure they all worked before..maybe manhandling of loom and various bits.

Haynes says they are 24V 1w and 12V 1.2w, but I can only find 1.2w 5mm capless in both voltages. Anyone tried these on a mark 3?

I haven't I'm afraid. The last time I had a MkIII clock set out, I "cannibalised" another set for its working bulbs and used those.

A small tribute to mac's work here (photos courtesy of mac):

Cover removed:

The failed thermal cutout:

Mac re-used the resistive wiring, made a new circuit board, fitted the new thermal cutout and replated the cover:

One superb piece of work:

Testing on macs rig:

Time to fit it back to the car, out comes the drip cover (much more easily than the first time around):

All working perfectly, I'm really chuffed :-)

Many thanks again, mac.

I guess I could cut a hole in the drip tray and fit a piece of see-through perspex to it ;-)

Had an „interesting“ Saturday, filming with the 343 DLS. A German TV company wrote to me, saying they wanted to do a piece about the Volvo 300, as the range will be 40 years old this year.

Image

I don’t know how good the end result will be, the weather was pretty poor and I wasn’t quite as prepared as I should have been. The car did its job well, cruising around the Eifel backroads smothered with GoPros, but it’s hard trying to remember 343 statistics, talking to a camera, and driving a car! If Chris Evans can’t do it, well …

It’s all going to be a bit embarrassing if the thing ever goes on air. I think on one occasion I waxed lyrical about the missing door pockets and 4spd gearbox on the bargain spec DLS (who cares really?) and I spent the last hour trying to stop my teeth chattering out on a windy field while trying to explain quality problems in the ’76 and ’77 model years.

The last minutes of fading daylight were spent doing “drive by” overtaking sequences, in pouring rain, the cameraman hanging out of the back of the XC70, trying not to crash into anything.

Anyway, the car is now more than ready for a big Scandinavian road trip in six week’s time. Replaced a heating hose for a slightly newer version last week, and tided up the ignition cables a bit, and she’s ready to go.

Cheers

Is that a circa '89/'90 Yamaha FJ1200 I spy at the back of the garage?

Sounds pretty cool! Great to see some acknowledgement for the 300 series. Car is looking great too, Tom - where are you visiting in Scandinavia?

It's called "PS - Das Automagazin". No idea when and if it will run though!

Yes, well spotted! '88 I think. Not mine though :-(

Up to the Nordkapp through Sweden in 3 days, then down via Norway and Denmark in 8 days. 6500kms in total.

That's the plan, anyway ;-)
