She's fun :D

Engine first started at 10:30 last night, and the fuel pressure regulator decided to leak. Removed and replaced and noticed that the fuel rail was epically scored, so went to the spare engine pile and got another. (This last sentance took a good 3 hours to diagnose and fix whilst tired)... this must be the first time I've ever seen Adam loosing his rag, granted I likely was too, and lack of sleep wasn't helping  After leak was cured, happyness came back.

Then the waterpump decided it wanted to leak rather than pump the magical cooling stuffs, but I happened to have a 3 week old pump on Fake, and Adam a spare waterpump gasket.

First test run was at 5:30 this morning, when we realised quite how loud the thing is. Today has been poncing up things (clutch adjustment etc whilst I still had access to the pit)

She runs fairly well considering that the engine isn't standard, and is on a non standard ECU map (whilst isn't the same non standard as the engine). It pinks under hard load (up a steep hill in 5th), so will require mapping (how does a car with a knock sensor connected to an ECU knock ffs, surely there is a "if knock, then retard" line in the code). I avoided the motorway on the way home to give the engine a fair running in.

I'll do a more detailed mini diary with pics later

The pinking doesnt make sense chris. Unless the knock sensor is faulty, if it is it could explain the idle.

I'll go and hook an oscilloscope up to it and smack it with a hammer... unless I can find a better way to test it ;)

I should have a stock Williams ECU pdp too, which might be a bit closer. Forgot to mention, she had an epic stress around Swansea as I left, wouldn't idle at all and felt lumpy, felt like a carb air leak. I had a nosey, couldn't find anything and then it magically went away :) I think I'll be niggle chasing for a while yet, but I can't really complain with the engine spec

Maybe the car was causing the problem...not happy at having finally rid itself of a dodgy carb!

Onto Thurs 10th:

Modified downpipe. As the clio is FWD, and the downpipe is the middle part of a 4-2-1 setup, we couldn't just rotate the flange (it's a flared fit from the pipe to the flange which allows rotation stock). Adam did some ninja welding to make a sexily functional downpipe (long term it'll be getting a manifold back system I expect, but not for a fair while)
Image
Exhaust fitted
Image
Injection fuel lines fitted. New had to be run from the tank as it's a carb to injection conversion, and doing it this way means I don't have to use a low pressure and high pressure pump with a swirl pot (my orig plan with Kar, but this way Adam has come up with is very very neat, and so quite comparitively)
Image
New epic fuel pump (off an Evo 4  )
Image
The currently epic sexy wiring loom, it's all tied down so it can't touch anything, but still... this will be out of the car and properly lengthened and wrapped very soon
Image
Podmore Towers
Image

Thanks again Adam, you know it's appriciated

Couple of niggles dealt with. Firstly, she now idles correctly (no longer lumpy as hell, and constantly hunting). With a mates help, spent Saturday cleaning bits of the idle circuit, and putting a scope on the signals to check the wiring was doing what it should.

At the time I didn't think my quick clean of the ICV had done anything, but it's removed a dubious hole that was in the map on warmup, and the fact the car wouldn't idle also during warmup. Bonza.

Also scoped the knock sensor, and measured the values of the TPS to check they were working correctly, I am still getting pinking, but noting like as bad since I put in Vpower (which is now 99 in my local Shell). The engine is non standard enough that likelihood of pinking is increased, so current plan is to continue working through the sensors and valves, and check everything is in perfect spec before continuing any further.

On the way to above mates house, she also had her first breakdown ;) The insulation on the lambda plug seems to have been made from econorubber, added to the fact it's not high temp wire and 20 years old meant that all three wires had lost their insulation and were shorting to chassis. As one of them is switched ignition, this led to an unhappy fusebox. Still, I've found the cause, done a tempory fix (added heat proof insulation to all three wires until I find a proper high temp wired plug from a clio in a yard. It's also led me to a point in the loom where I think there needs to be a relay, so I've got to put that in too. I've mentioned it to Adam to consider on his looms too, it was only a problem on mine as I used the carb preheater and fuel cut solanoid as switched ignition feeds to keep new wires down, and I'm not happy drawing more power from those than is required.

On the other hand, she's pretty rapid. I've had much big smileness

Sweet mate glad shes running better. I thought the idle could be vaguely blameable by a gunked up ICV!!!

Sweet!

Do we know if a mk2 heater box will help clearance?

Good thinking, would be interesting to find out! Anyone know of any benefits of the Mk3 heaterbox anyway? My Mk2 had an equally as good heater, possibly even marginally better than my Mk3's

Foggy, if you have a spare, I'd like to try it. The conefilter is getting swapped out for a panel filter (though I'm kinda falling for the rice sound!) and I'd like a mk2 box to mod in there. Otherwise it'll be an inline fan

Bah you wimp, leave the cone filter on - it'll be fast enough to make some induction noise!
