Re: Turbo 360 - cleaning up corroded wiring. Help? 20/11

Post by L14MNP » 20 Nov 2010 10:00 pm

I left the 360 engine bay loom and messed on with the B230 englne looms, I need more wire now lol.

Real Radio provided some fine afternoon coverage of the Newca5t1e match whilst in the garage it must be said. :D

Now I need to type up my hand written scrawl or I may forget what to do as I went a bit mad on the looms chopping plusg off and what not lol.

Is the solder on a straight run in the loom? Solder is a real problem in car looms, it creates a fatigue point. Best way for anything thats likely to move (ends of wires etc) is proper non insulated crimps, not the halfords coloured ones though!

Yeah it is Chris. I know I should be using proper crimps from VWP or similar but I just haven't arsed myself to go on the site and place an order. it almost seems pointless for just a few things, you know?

TBH with you if when I am finished giving the drivetrain and body a mini resto and I am happy enough, I was thinking of making an entirely new loom for the engine and bay when I know it is just a straight case of copying what I have, but just not ATM.
I have a couple of ideas to try out for cleaning up the copper and I will see if it will tin. I've never had dry joint problems before using this method but I know what you're saying.

As I say, it isn't intended for long term use. Maybe a year or so with the car off the road again for the salt etc.

Plus if I did crimp, I'd still be cautious of resistance in the wires due to the corrosion, and the future problems it would bring. Typical, the rest of it was fine!

Oh yeah, don't get me started on those coloured crimps/spades/ring terminals etc. They are only to be used in a matter of emergency! I am ashamed to say I had some on my ignition switch, but everything else that's been replaced have been with the proper jobs/ratchet crimper. 340pw

Cheers mate, Liam.

More wiring done. I just need a bit more to extend my AFM and have to check the pin outs because I snipped a plug off (AFM) to untangle it and extend, and two of the wires are the same colour/gauge ffs!
Once I extend that and somehow rejoin the engine bay loom headlamp connections I'm all sorted.

Lots of things have been moved. I shall get pics when I next do something of note.

That makes sense mate, I've been changing things almost weekly since me and Adam got the F7R in Fake 12+ months ago and it would have been pointless for me to make a proper loom from the start. Keep the pics coming though, always interesting to see.

I've been locked out of the garage since I snapped the key in the lock on Friday lol. Yesterday I attended to that, and as the roads were completely impassable (read: no sledging lol) I promptly set about some barely worthwhile mincing.

In the interest in tidying the bay, I removed the old B19 airbox bracket. I was using it for the boost sensor thing, injector resistor pack, EZK module and radio supression relay but these all have new homes now.

Pleased with the condition under the bracket given that it is almost 28 years old.

The offending article. Do all 360's have this, or just mk2's? I guess I'll stick it in the pile to accompany the B19 if it's needed.

The mincing was then turned to the earth lead. I dislike these greatly. A total mess IMO.

As you can see it originally bolts to the block and then stretches across to the battery tray.

Sorted
Image
The block-chassis section is now nicely hidden beneath the engine mount.
I may replace this for newer stuff, but it will do for now. It's a bit hard to go the shop when the roads are closed lol.

I was running out of small jobs so I dug my old smashed headlight out of the cupboard.
Image

As you know, the air filter is directly behind there. A bit off trimming and fibreglassing and it will make a nice CAI IMO.

The same cupboard contains uber OEM rareness which I'm gonna give to John. I can only find one though. I know you UK mk3 boys lust after these so here's a pointless pic :/ lol
Image
Err that's it.
