yeah i'd be careful of using sticky stuff remover, its managed to melt/dissolve the scraper i was using so it cant be great on paint.

Re: Speedy88's The Tardis: Got any gear?
Cheers. Man I'm so tired, today it didn't stop raining but I pushed on anyway. Got the new box in and attached to the diff, currently it's jacked up at the front but I *should* get it in tomorrow fine. Gasket tore around the bolts because everything was wet
pretty sure it'll be fine though as it's solid everywhere else. Took me a lot longer to do this than normal as rain and cold makes speedy very very tired. I had to lift the box up with my chest as the jack proved useless. Tomorrow should get all linkages back together and we'll be set, pictures to follow.

Re: Speedy88's The Tardis: Got any gear?
I remember changing the secondary unit (unit contains diff as well) on my old variomatic, it wasn't easy working without a pit. Used a small trolley jack but it was fiddly lining it up with the mounting bracket to get the bolts in, and I had the benefit of my dad's garage and summer!

Re: Speedy88's The Tardis: Got any gear?
Got this done the day after, only an extra 2 hours so it's all good. Man it's so sweet being able to change gear and not have to man handle the thing
Dropping the old box down

State of that oil!

New box ready to go in

The neighbours LOVED me when I washed all the oil into the street and down the drain
20 minutes of fire and hammers today, I got the drain plug off. Interesting pattern on the other side. I have no idea what the silver sludge is

I don't think this thing has EVER had an oil change, which makes the previous owner a lying cnut.
Still rocks but not as bad as before, it could well be the diff that's the problem. Still glad I did the box though as most of the synchros were shot.
Next month I'm treating the thing to a stainless exhaust, my current has the death rattle

Re: Speedy88's The Tardis: Got any gear?
That grey sludge is years of metal particles, mainly from the synchros wearing that have mixed with oil and stuck to your drain plug!!! Glad you found the box an improvement, like i said i never had any problems with it!! What fluid did you put back in it out of interest? I always used to run 33G ATF!! Found it the nicest by far and slickest for gearchanges.

Re: Speedy88's The Tardis: Got any gear?
Unfortunatly I'm quite poor and all I had spare was 10w 40 mineral oil, not bad but I'll be treating it to something better next month. If you say 33G is best I think I'll get some of that
Re: Speedy88's The Tardis: Got any gear?
So basically, you put engine oil in your transmission? It ain't an Austin Maxi for heaven's sake
And for draining oil down the sewers, don't you have special community dump sites for that?

Re: Speedy88's The Tardis: Got any gear?
It was the residue from 3 days work, I couldn't mop it up as it was pouring it down with rain. 10w 40 isn't ideal but it is a recommended alternative and I've had no complaints yet from 200 miles.

Re: Speedy88's The Tardis: Got any gear?
Apparently, Castrol 10w40 Magnatec engine oil is the current recommendation for V300 gearboxes. There are a few threads about it on V3M ... Haven't tried it myself though.

Yup, I believe Volvo changed it's recommendation for M4x gearboxes to take 10w40 oilnvdw wrote:So basically, you put engine oil in your transmission? It ain't an Austin Maxi for heaven's sake![]()

Assumption is the mother of all fuck ups. I most deffinatly did not assume that all that oil that came out from removing the box was just from the gearbox and I most deffinatly did NOT think "sod it, I'll replace my diff fluid next week". There deffinatly was oil in my diff when I came to replacing it today. Honest.

No engine oil for the diff, Hypoid's the right stuff here IIRC ...
