Or a new starter.
Might be the solenoid.
Re: progress thread
That'd either be a sticky starter, or most likely a bad earth on the engine block. Did you try the thing I suggest by putting the braided strap from the neggy side of the battery to the front side of the block beneath the rocker cover? I had EXACTLY the same problem with mine. Started once then just clicked. Changed the earthing point and it starts every time now
Try that, failing it I'll grab a pick tomorrow where mine is mounted. Got interwebz now.
Otherwise, try putting the car in 5th gear, and rock it back and forth a good few times with nothing running. It should free up the starter in theory. Apparently the starters are very picky about earthing points though

Hammer is always the best way to deal with any problem...
Jon the earth for the engine is on the inlet manifold and I've got it running round to meet the battery negative on the body. It has started every time before it just doesn't want to get finished!
Will do what you said and role it in 5th tomorrow will hopefully just be a little sticky where it hasn't run

Re: progress thread
Hopefully all the parts turn up, I've got a hydraulic hand brake to plumb in at some point!
Also shit loads of rust to weld up under the car seems fine its just the arches and 1 jacking point

Re: progress thread
Where does the main earth from the battery go, it should go to the block. The earth on my loom should go to the back of the head. Your using the engine bay loom from the new car aren't you??

Re: progress thread
ye i have the main engine earth coming from the inlet manifold and earthing with the negative from the battery (take it thats right otherwise car didnt turn over)
then i have your loom earthing at the back of the engine
so what your saying is the negative from the battery should go on the engine?

Re: progress thread
Yeah thats right. The braided neg lead goes from the battery, bolts to the chassis at the bottom of the battery tray, and rest of the braided lead bolts to the block.

Re: progress thread
Aaa I see, so off the negative to the tray and the engine?
With out sounding stupid doesn't that then pass a current through the engine?

Re: progress thread
Yes. The engine is earthed.
