It's the new improved MOT History service from Gov.uk (old cert or V5C ref number no longer required)

That is incredible. Big brother is watching ... let's check all our neighbours' cars and wag our fingers at them.

Either a car is safe (MOT), or it's not (no MOT) - but plastering that info all over the web ... not my cup of tea. Maybe they should just have made the MOT test stricter (no advisories anymore, just get it fixed und retested within 4 weeks).

Just my opinion ...

I am interested in data protection, but I don't see a problem with publishing data on products/items. Data protection is about your personal data not random products. You can already get mot/tax data on most vehicles, more details are irrelevant to its 'acceptableness' in law.

Gov'ts are tending to use crowd sourcing more to police/report issues, and why not? Australia now has a product safety/EMC registration system where any opne can check a particular product has been registered and someone is taking responsibility for its electrical compliance.

However I do take issue with the police 100% relying on a database that can be prone to error, and using it to sieze your car. After watching these police programs, they can be 'sure' you have no insurance after speaking to an insurance company, only to discover later that the insurance company was wrong. There maybe a problem with uninsured drivers but making everyone prove their innocence is not really for an advanced society.

Anyway my 360 has no records and my 940 seems to have expired in 2007 (probably after it was imported to N.Ireland).

I think it's a useful consumer tool to check validity of the paper receipt since they went cheap abd stopped issuing proper certs.

Wouldn't put too much emphasis on advisories as some testers write some right old garbage.

I'm more concerned of the DVLA flogging data to parking cowboys...
