Nimminz' GLT Turbo Daily

Post by Nimminz » 09 Feb 2014 01:31 pm

PART ONE: viewtopic.php?f=52&t=11339

Thought I'd create a part 2, new look board, new thread etc. etc.

So I'm well on the way to getting the turbo conversion in the car. Loom's in and everythings pretty much got. Was going to start on tuesday but the headgasket's leaking water into the engine so will sort this at the same time. John's got a 760 head i can buy which has the sodium filled exhaust valves so that's going on. Will still get started in February.

Some new wheels which i really like but found the RX7 brakes don't fit, so they'll be used till i get round to fitting the brakes

Loom fitting

Image

Atchi got me some spigot rings cut for the 15x8 steels
Image

Got a VW '99' programmable intermittant wiper relay, not fitted yet but should make wipers a bit nicer to use
Image

Clutch sorted, 740 TD pressure plate, Vauxhall/opel C20XE (astra GTE not Calibra gearbox) Friction disk and a 360 release bearing
Image

Sump oil return
Image

Intake manifold all stuck back together with some new injector o-rings and new vac and link hose on the fuel pressure regulator
Image

Had a fair bit of trouble with front wheel bearings which is occuring from re-using stake nuts. I have loads of new bearings but no new stake nuts. Am thinking of upgrading to castellated nuts, drilling a hole through the spindle and getting a split pin in there, any ideas on this? I think, but will check, if this nut works : http://www.classicfasteners.com.au/cast ... l-zinc-pl/

So This week, I'll pick up the head, get on shortening the engine loom, make the exhaust centre section, see if i can get the guages fitted and wired up, few brakets made for stuff and find a boost tube for between the intake mani and intercooler.

Thanks for looking

I'm not sure but didn't Born Build Beauties had new stake nuts?

And the 240 lh 2.4 wiringloom I used fitted through the original wiringloom hole in the bulkhead! Took me about 4 days to get the old motor and wiring out and get the new motor in and running on lh 2.4! (without a turbo)

Looks great on those wheels. Are they bmw e30 mim's? What happened to your williams spares?

Drilling the spindle and using castellated nuts and split pins is a viable plan, I prefer that to stake nuts anyway

I've wanted a nice set of Mim's on a 300 for ages! They look good. What offset are they? I know E30's have the same PCD but they tend to be much lower offset (ie. 15-20ET), I think with a road going 300 the lowest I'd realistically want to go is 25 on a 7" wide rim?

Checked tonight after seeing the comments, YES they are MiM's - never realized when i bought em off John. 15x7 Et 13 58mm CB 3 are Italian, one is English lol. They're not exactly 'pristine' but i've given 3 a ghetto refurb with some 5 quid paint and a couple 2nd hand tyres. They will be for sale when get the steelies refurbed and use the rubber on these if anyone's interested.

Tonight I've Taped the engine loom in the correct position round the intake manifold, will cut and shorten some bits when i check the Coolant tempearture sensor location (under Cyl. 4 i think) and the knock sensor location (under exhaust side of Cyl 2/3 i think)

I have the golf "99" relay in Fake and the Corset, really does make a difference. Only issue is if you have no juice left, they do a couple of wipes to smear the screen :s

Castle nuts, yes, it's been on my list for a while. I'm sure as said about either BBB or Mac found a source of stake nuts in the mean time though.

Mac must have some somewhere, I certainly can get 'em from the DCN, so I can't see RJ having an issue.

Right, I fitted the '99' relay yesterday and it is as good as it says on the tin. A great improvement :) Had a lovely snowy 'test night'. Picked the head up off John too so that's here.

Going to start tomorrow, doing the turbo swap, swapping heads, front wheel bearings and I'll give the box and diff an oil change as well.

Castle nuts are a no-go, after thinking properly about it i remembered the speedo cable. I did start thinking of some nut with grub screw(s) approach but it really starts going beyond the hastle of just getting new stake nuts. I'll buy a new set as i have no spare oil seals and use the satke nuts on them and find a new pair for when i fit the RX-7 brakes.

Hopefully I'll have some pretty photos tomorrow :)

So today i got started on the turbo conversion. Bit of a slow start, got the intake manifold off, LE loom shoved out the way, coolant drained, Air intake out including AFM and mount and a few things measured and worked out. Then it started raining and we retreated indoors to tidy up the new intake manifold and head, sorted the wiring out for the engine, which now just needs to be shortened after a test fit tomorrow. Got all the nuts off the exhaust mani but didn't manage to get the downpipe off before the rain came.

Tomorrow, I'm hoping to get the bumper, radiator, timing belt and OEM exhaust system off, test fit the turbo and manifold to see what clearance I have for the turbo it's self and the oil drain. Then the heads coming off ready for the new one. Might even get the oil drained and sump swapped and start the oil filter relocation... All depends on weather really.

Few pics

The work area :/

My neat wiring for the intake mani

On the new head, its a 530 out a 940 with sodium filled valves for cooling :) Needed to do this to check the length of the Coolant temperature sensor wire before i tape it all up.

Cheers for looking,
Matt

now you've still got the head off, have you thought about porting it? gasketmatching?

especcialy the exhaust ports

Have wondered about it, but came to the conclusion that you'd have to really know what you're doing and that my attempts with a file might not give a positive result. If it can be done DIY I'd definitely give it a go, suppose theres not much to go wrong on the exhaust side ... I could be wrong though

Its pretty safe to polish the exhaust side with a dremel, I find a soft tool and some fine valve lapping paste brings them up a treat. You could match the ports to the manifold, just take the edges off if youve got a step

You need a bit of knowhow to reshape the port

This is shaping up to be a brilliant motor, my black glt may have to follow suit with coilovers, 4 pots and a turbo :D

Cheers!

Ended up just swapping the A cam into the new head and the coolant sensors. Got that swapped yesterday along with the engine mount modified for turbo clearance and got the timing belt back on and chopped out the OEM wiring.

Today we got the car up in the air, pulled the whole transmission off, swapped the LE fly for the LH dog-dish, stuck in the Vaux Redtop clutch disk and 740TD pressure plate, John modified the bellhousing rather superbly to accept the LH crank sensor, Got it all stuck back together. We also swapped the sump for the new one with oil drain fitting.

Got loads done last two days, massive thanks to FilthyJohn who came through and did a fair old amount of work, have no shame in saying id be no where near as far without him!!

Tomorrow gonna get wiring sorted, turbo plumbing, oil filter relocation and cooler done and maybe start fabbing the centre section and backbox.

Here's a load of photographs :D

Wiring for the OEM LE-jet system, hoping ones an IGN+ for easer wiring, not that it would be a problem

That's it for pics, will try take a few more tomorrow

Cheers for looking,

have you already put the bellhouse back on? when I cut the bellhouse that way the sensor would not fit in the block!

great progress so far! keep the updates coming
