Put 10 litres into the tank of the GLT and top up with V Power (or equivalent). You'll still end up with about the same overall octane fuel in the tank and the £10 or so saved more than offsets the extra for the V Power.

Or still fill up with normal fuel but add the old fuel in smaller quantities.

Or use it to start bonfires.

Yeah, that's what I did with one of the petrol cans to make room - well, pour it into the dubious Japanese car that I care far less about than the GLT...!

So it has fresh fuel..... but doesn't yet start....! Fuel issues I think. I've used a hand syphon pump connected to the fuel pump outlet and been able to draw fuel up through the lines from the tank right up to the pump.

I then replaced the inline filter that someone has fitted in the past between the fuel pump outlet and the pressure regulator (white plastic vertical cylinder?) - chucked some fuel down the carb and it sort of tries to run at circa 500rpm but stops doing any trying once all the new fuel has ran out. I think this is a supply issue as on cranking the fuel filter is only 1/3 ish full - should I be looking at the pump here? I'm still able to hand pump fuel from the tank so I don't think there's any blockage there.

Not ruling out the carb being gummed up either...

Probably the pump.

The BB one Christmas was surging a bit around 50mph when in heading for the Belfast - Cairnryan boat. It packed up completely by the time I got to Glasgow. Prior to that, if I left it a few days, I'd need to reprime the system. With a big in-line filter like in your pic, I had to take it out of circuit first, pull the fuel through, then re-introduce it. It was never particularly full. Certainly less than half. One I'd changed the pump, I could leave it longer and not have to remove in-line to prime it and it was visibly fuller (nearly full).

I'm thinking the same - it's been a long while since I've had a carbed car but I'd expect the filter to contain more fuel than that

Still a bit inconclusive, the engine should run nice for a few seconds on 'chuck' fuel. Could be something else.

Test the pump by cranking the engine with the carb fuel pipe in a jar.

If thats ok then suspect the carb, try filling the carb via the supply pipe, then starting.

Cheers Tony - they were my next steps when I have an assistant available :D

I will also change the plugs and leads, as they're quite old and I have a set ready to fit.

Well... it does run if pour fuel directly into the carb... perhaps I wasn't being generous enough with the fuel and I'd replaced the spark plugs and leads.

It is still not sucking fuel up from the tank, I have perhaps 8-9 litres in there - is that enough!? I've ordered a fuel pump just incase as I saw there was one on eBay. There's some sort of belt squeal or auxiliary bearing whir from somewhere, but I suppose that's to be expected after 9 years of not being run!

I'll try cranking it over and checking the carb filler pipe in a jar when I have a helper to see if it's coming through that far or if something in the carb is blocking it... The fuel filter definitely had more fuel in it after the brief running.

Proof!

Have you checked the needle valve in the float bowl?

Cyclemaster has a secondary fuel bowl instead of a choke mech, and the needle valve for it is manually operated. I went to move it after the winter and it was stuck fast, gummed up with "old" (i.e. autumn) fuel

I haven't... but it's on my list, it'll either be that or the fuel pump at this stage I reckon.

If you needed to move it surely you could've just pedalled  :P

The needle in the needle valve, not the bike :p

Hi all.
Bloody hell, that engine looks clean for its age.
Cheers Mark.

I can't take all the credit for the engine bay cleanliness, it was already pretty damn clean - I've just cleaned parts as I've been putting them back and whilst there's access.

Seems there is fuel from the pump on cranking, so suspect Chris's suggestion is spot on (don't get big headed now )
