Yes it's real I have mentioned it many times but never shown it until now!

So this is "The Beast" (how imaginitive) I will just do a photo dump at the end.

Specs:

1986 Volvo 360 GLEi Special Equipment, only made for 3 months in 1986 available only in saloon finished in Ocean Blue Metallic or Smoked Silver.

Actual mileage just under 73k miles
Leather Seats
Air Conditioning
Air recirculation
Snow Trays
High compression B200E (10:1)
Black door cards only equipped to leather seated 300s

The Bling:

I will be adding

OEM 13" SE alloys (8 V caps to make a decent set of 4!)
Hella spotlight grille
Economy Gauge (fitted)
Ambient air temp gauge (fitted)
Genuine VDO 300 series oil pressure gauge (fitted)
Volvo 240 boost gauge
Fibreglass extra gauge panel replica for oil and boost gauge
Fitted pioneer speakers behind the original speaker covers

Once on the road
B230ET running standard Motronic 1.0
2" classicswede lowering springs
2" classicswede lowering blocks
40 point adjustable shortened dampers front and rear classicswede/Gaz

So I bought this September 2012 (well my Grandad got it for me as I was still living in NZ) and when I got home the pictures definitely didn't show the real extent of the rust and so it has sat in my garage over the last couple of years awaiting restoration while I gather parts to fix it.

I have pretty much finished the interior, replaced seat belts as the clips were taped together, replaced a couple door handles and trim surrounds and fitted the gauges. The interior is pretty much perfect so it was an easy job.

I have removed the passenger outer sill and have got a replacement sill for both sides (NOS) and they fit perfectly.

Killed a 1988 Volvo 760 tic saloon as an engine donor (regret doing so but needs must)

I have only recently actually properly started working on it as I have a 1985 mk2 golf cl that was a 1.3 and is now a 1998 2.0 16V mk3 gti which took up all of my time and money as it involved stripping everything and fitting gti spec suspension even fuel tank! So it is a fully sorted little racer... Thinking of selling it and getting a 340

Anyway enough blabing have some photos (most are from my phone so excuse the bad quality)

Bought a mini mig welder which turns out to be shite so the welding isn't the best and looks crap but it is solid so please don't bug me about the welds.

Those aren't the decent set of caps, three of the wheels were buckled and had major kerbing got them sorted out in NZ for about £80!

Here it is before it became a massive money pit

Currently working on rebuilding the rear arch, have discovered a crusty bit in the chassis so will be removing the exhaust to get to that, rear silencer is pretty rotten so will probably just chop that off :D

So then folks what do you think? Any helpful tips?

Cheers

Welding looks fine, but aiming for better is always a good attitude. The GLEi was a classic, my mate had basic reddy/brown one when I had a high compression GLE saloon was good torque times.

Lots of great work done there, keep it up. Don't tell me about cars sitting around waiting for work, I have one or two :?

Thanks :) I'm trying to improve it and have been fiddling with the welder but even now if there is the slightest twist in the line then the wire feed cuts out.

My first 360 was an 85MY GLE saloon high compression with nearly 500k kms on it and that was worn to buggery but still so much fun, have had a few cheeky drives up the road in this and it is completely different and way more responsive!

I think most people get projects start them then life gets in the way and they sit around for years waiting for attention.

Forgot to say that the A/C all works, just needs regassing :)

Love this project - that's some unusual rust in places, but well worth fixing on an SE. Will make a great car :)

Thanks Steve, I must admit I have never seen rust around the boot lock like this before.

Unfortunately I ended up working this weekend and having a shit day today so won't be doing anything on it tonight as I want to relax. So hopefully during the week I can get some more work done.

I didn't know you took my old wheels with you! !! Good chap. And you still need to give me that grill. It looks "hella" cool. And insert rim shot here.

 this grille ain't going anywhere! I think the wheels are amazing so had to bring them with me.

So I have stone chipped the sill but it's not like any stone chip I have seen before, it is really smooth so doesn't give the texture or look of the original stuff but it does the job. Have removed the rear section of the exhaust to see the extent of the chassis rust... I can poke my finger through it, ah well just a bit more welding. The underside is pretty solid and the diff is leaking from the back plate so will get a gasket kit from Mac on pay day.

Will take photos tomorrow in the daylight and a video of it running with no rear silencer :D

A 360 with no exhaust after the middle muffler sounds amazing under load above 2k.

I think I will leave the rear section off until it is back on the road and decide whether or not to replace it or just straight pipe the last section, love the sound of it.
