Hi Guys, being a newbie and a wally I've managed to post this already in the wrong section duh! Anyway I'm new to the forum and site but used to have an 88 340GL shown above when I was 18ish which I loved and always wanted another. I have just been offered an 88 360GLE which has been in a barn for 12 years untouched. Before I move it what should I do to try and avoid damage. For instance, put redex down the spark plug holes? Fresh petrol and a new battery obviously. Any advice would be appreciated as I would like to get her back on the road if it doesn't need too much.

I don't think anyone can cover all bases, but I've had mine in long term storage / occasional use.

I would nearly say just fire away with some fresh fuel, but one problem I had was a jumping belt due to Aluminium corrosion dust from the pump/head that had fallen on the crank pulley. So check for dust and the condition of the timing belt. Renew anyway before appling lots of revs.

I'm not sure what redex down the plugs is to achieve but the pistons need oil, so if they are dry bung in a little oil. Come to think of it the sump will probably be full of gunge and a full oil change is in order before starting. Use flushing oil if you can find it, and only run it on tick over while you check for leaks etc for about 5 mins, then change filter and oil again with proper stuff. The sump will still be gungy so change again fairly soon. I'm basing that on engine strip down not actaul failures, but there have been a few reports of low mileage old cars breaking pumps or oil starvation so its mainly cautionary. The B200s can survive all sorts of abuse.

For starting I would turn on the starter without the spark king lead once you have done whatever preoiling you think is necessary. Then pour in a few cc of fuel down the carb and it should start, hopefully enough to get fuel from the tank (you need about 10L). Check for leaky fuel pipes in the engine bay and under the car, up over the torque tube and under the rear seat. The rubber probably needs replaced on the feed and return.

It being a 88 GLE it probably has injection, and after 12 years I would not be suprised if the injectors are gunked up with old fuel. The fuel pump and filters will be aswell.. I would drain and flush the tank, replace all the hoses and filters (those cotton braided hoses dry and brake are the worst) and get those injectors cleaned and put some new seals around them.

UK cars at are only injection if they have an i or are GLT. A GLE is carb.

Thanks for the advice guys. I went to the car and took the plugs out, then put a good squirt of oil down each bore. I then left it a few hours to soak in a bit encase of sticking rings. I refit the plugs, stuck a battery on her and all ignition lights and most electrics seemed to work, I whipped the main lead off and turned her over which she did beautifully. As soon as I knew she was free I put a gallon of fresh petrol in, luckily it was parked up all those years ago with not much fuel in and it must have evaporated so the fuel that i put in was not contaminated with off old petrol. I turned it over and over with full choke and she made no effort whatsoever. I took a plug out to see if I could smell fuel on it which i couldn't, it was just saturated in the oil that I put down the bores. What can I try next?more fuel? Priming it with easy start to see if she makes effort to fire? Fresh plugs because they are contaminated with oil?

I would try removing as much oil as possible from the bore, replace the plugs and try again.

If it is not working then check for spark at the coil by taking off the coil lead at the dizzy and putting a spark plug in it, hold it with mole grips and hold it to the engine block and crank it over to check for spark. If there is spark then check all the leads to see if they are sparking. I would also renew the plugs while you are there.

If the spark is yellow then it is weak, it should be blue.

Next check fuel, take off the feed pipe to the carb, crank the engine over and see if fuel is coming out. Catch it in a pot of course

If it has both of those check the compression of the engine.

Those are the three things an engine needs to run so check them first as they are the basics.

Believe it or not, a gallon of fresh fuel may not have been enough - the fuel pumps are not the strongest of units, and often struggle to pull fuel through if the system has been left empty/drained for a period of time. I had this happen a little while ago, and was little option but to get the car to a local country garage - they reprimed the system, splashed in some additional fuel, and she fired up first time!..

Hmmm, just at car now. No spark :-(. I've checked plugs, cleaned the crank sensor, and still nothing. Not sure what to do next?

I would get a new set of plugs, leads, dizzy cap, rotor arm and if that doesn't help then a new renix unit might be needed.

Exhaust testing before buying new parts, Renix units never fail. Check the crank sensor for continuity and inspect the contacts in the Renix unit, if its dry or uneven looking may not be good. One car i to had to solder the wires into the Renix. Check the coil is clean and pull the king lead off and check if it sparks to ground. Check there is power to the Renix.

Note that it won't spark until it gets to a reference point on the flywheel, although there are 2 unlike the Bosch EZK ignition cars which only have 1 and take longer to start.

For fuel, litteraly through some fuel down the carb barrel, the engine should fire if you have spark.

Ok, so I have checked and double checked, there is no spark. I've been looking on other subjects on the forum and some suggest that if on turnover the rev counter flickers then the coil is doing its job, well. . . . this one doesn't budge or flicker and there was a spare renix unit complete with coil in the boot which looked worse than the one on but I tried it anyway and it was the same. My thoughts now are coil, renix or crank sensor? I don't like being defeated, it has to be one of those things unless someone has any other suggestions?

I would ask how much they want for the renix, coil and crank sensor and just get them all ticked off as suspects.

You have already confirmed there is no spark, you need to figure why, what checks have you done for the crank sensor? Can you check its resistance? Can you check there is power to the renix? A meter only costs about £5, much cheaper than a sensor.
