89 340 for classic trials

Post by bolstermonobloc » 21 Apr 2018 02:16 pm

Hi, looking for some/any info about prepping my 89 1.7 340 for use on classic trials.
Suspension, mostly, looking for another 2 or 3 inches of ground clearance, preferably with adjustment.
Coilovers presumably?
Advice on spring rates would be most welcome!!
Any thoughts on extracting a little more power from the engine (1.7) would be great too.
I would like to fit 14" wheels to get a better range of tyres, anyone had problems with that?

There is a set of Volvo 360 GLT 14" wheels on eBay at the moment. I have 15" wheels with 195/50 tyres standard height no problems.

Thanks for that. I had noticed the 360 wheels, but it seems a shame to fit alloys that will probably get damaged!!
I think that 4x100 pcd steel wheels are easy enough to come by, but I'm not sure of the offset.
My current trials car has 14" 175 80 tyres, so I might see if I can squeeze a taller tyre under the arches.

The steel wheels from a Volvo 440/460 will fit and they are 14". I just gave mine away to my friend who bought my other 360 off me.

Mk2 Golf steel wheels will fit, as for tyres size there is plenty of clearance as standard so if you lifted it a couple inches you could probably fit truck tyres!

For my track days I'm using 15" alloy rims

Rims: 15" wheels 6.5j x ET40, just a few mm clearance to the strut, but keeping the geometry such as scrub radius close to original.

Tyres = 195 50 15 Yokohama ADO8s. With these tyres one of them skims the strut a little (on one side only).

You can use wheel-size.com to find the original wheels ET etc and then calculate the change to different sizes and offsets. 340s might be a little different to 360s, but 360 GLT 14"x5.5J wheels do generally fit as do 4 stud BMW wheels from the same era (similar to the golf ones mentioned).
