When I was a lad they were cheap Hi-Fi out of the Kays Catalogue. ;) probably a bit behind Bush and Goodmans, but maybe a cut above Amstrad.

(BBC Alba & Radio nan Gàidheal (sometimes called by lowlanders as Tcheuchter TV & Radio) really do exist - if ever you wonder where some loose change of the licence fee goes to.)

Well, she made it to both the SBKV and the National this year. 2nd in class at the Southern too! (yeah, ok, only me and Andy had 300's there....)

Well, 233,000 miles on Sunday, Karina and I went to explore Ashley Walk in the New Forest (for those who don't know, it's where we went to look over with the 300 National last year and I was harping on about fake submarine pens, it was a WW2 bombing test range. 99% of people as normal have no idea about it) I found 2 new to me earthquake bomb craters that I can only imagine were made by tallboys as only 1 grandslam was ever detonated in the UK, about 500yrds away.

Anyway, I digress. On the way home, we spotted an 02 plated white Focus at 45 degrees to the road just on the grass. Nothing really new, so I ignored it, until I saw the warning triangle 50 yrds behind. I felt a pang of guilt driving past, so spun Fake round and went to see all was ok and that breakdown was on it's way, if not I had a tow rope in the back to offer a lift to the nearest town. As I was parking up the chap was already walking over to me, wallet in hand and getting out his AA card. Turns out he didn't carry a mobile, nor know where he was. Warm Fuzzy Feeling (tm) for being a helpful chap.

Today, however, to repay my kindness, as I was leaving work today, I suddenly heard a brooming noise, but wasn't going anywhere. Turns out the prop was spinning on the splines at the gearbox input shaft. First time I've seen one go on the splines. So, I wound the clamp up to 11, rather than the correct torque as I normally have them and have grannied her back to the drive. I'll investigate further when the weather is better.

Right, well, work put paid to that idea. Fake has sat quietly rusting at the top of the drive since I brought it home with the knackered prop in the last post.

But, I figured it's the 300 national, so should make a token effort to bring her. Rang up the MOT station 2 days ago, booked it in for 2pm today (test ran out mid July)

Having vast amount of time spent on her in between prop breaking and now (work project plus just not having the enthusiasm means the only time she's seen any attention was this morning) she was in good form, drove with no hissy fits about not being used and got to the garage fine.

My tester got me to do the second man stuff, I explained why she looked even rougher than normal, all went lovely.

Until we got to the point where the MOT has changed twice in the last 12 months, both in January and in April. Long and short of it is she'd have passed last years MOT with flying colours, but 2 fails on the new system.

*OSR door not opening from the outside (it hasn't since 2006, test only used to cover front doors)
*NS driveshaft boot split - test only used to cover front gaiters. I'm actually glad this has changed, I would have picked it up this time as I'm about to do a lot of work around that area, but it might catch a few in time in the future.

I remember reading up on it, the only thing I noted that would affect her was steering locks, but that's for only post 2001 cars. No idea why I missed these!

Rally solution, weld rear doors shut, remove rear seat if any and use pop rivets to attach few metal pieces over rear door handles.

Of course proper method is better for originality and you get usable rear seat area, which is quite nice if need to do some work to car later on.

Mmmmmmmmmmm, progress.

Nothing photo'd I'm afraid, she's currently sat at the top of the drive with ticket, tax and insurance and I don't think I've driven her for... 5 months? I'm fed up of prop failure and don't intent to drive it on a standard prop again. She looks quite sorry for herself.

Lots of paper based thinking, maths etc going on. Today I finally managed to prove a guess myself and a fellow nutter had last August.

We were right. Plan can continue.

Torque tube will fit without moving the engine or the gearbox. However, whilst I could make it fit with 3 custom parts I'm thinking I might make 4, just for the piece of mind. I'll get some photos taken when things get more interesting.

Give it a few months for me to make some bits and check. It's not something that will just bolt up, but I'd put money on the fact Volvo were half thinking of putting a torque tube on a 1.7 incase it needed it. I need to check my old B14 again, but it all just seems a bit convenient.

I think I know where your going with this. I semi looked into it before I put the T5 in mine. Lots of things make you wonder why they didn't torque tube the 1.7's!!

Cheaper. Solely cheaper.

This is the same period of manufacture that Volvo went from 3 torque tube bearings to 2. I reckon they tried it with both then when the prop proved to be able to cope, went with that. It must have been so close to the line though, they decided the 360GLS needed a TT when released (I believe the GLS was the first 360 out?) with it's huge 92/95bhp. The 1.7 books at 85bhp, so in that 10horses they decided it was too much.

Would also go to explain why the 340 never got the B18KP that the 400 had for 4 years of 300 production life, that book valued at 95bhp too.
