WooDooUKs ReVolvo Project Trackday 2
WooDooUKs ReVolvo Project Trackday 2
Well i thought it was about time I started my Project thread, (now that i have nearly Finished it)
Well it all started last year when summer was fast coming to an end and time to put the mk2 escort away for the winter was near.
I began to fancy somthing small RWD that could be used as an all year round toy. Final aim is to have someinth ad quick as my 205 gti 1.9 but RWD, so naturally the F7P 16v is the was the way to go.
Then i remebered the Volvo 340 which i had looked at previously as a first car for my brother. After he poo-pooed that suggestion nothing more came of it till 6 months later.
Whilst looking at the For sale section on here a 1.4 3dr came up for free with 145k miles. so i booked my train ticked to oxford (from cardiff) for £12 and off i went and came back with this.
to say i was pleased was an under statement, for car that had done 145k miles it was in fantastic condition, has had some welding at the rear in the usual places, Jacking points Etc. and just a bit of rot left on the front valance.
What amazed my the most was the build quality, It didn't rattle, shake, whine or make any other odd noises. ( i am used to driving a Pug 205 with 115k miles and it is totaly the reverese)
Anyway, first job was to set about lowering the car. which desperatley need doing as shown by this picture.
Few messages and few weeks later i had these and a set of lowering blocks to go with them.
Mucho Better, The car now doesn't learch about when changing gear which makes it more comfortable to drive.
I picked up some cheapo steats and harnesses of the Bay. Made up some frame to mount the to the volvo runners and stripped it out from the doors back.
The Car was then used like this for a couple of months whilst i set about sourcing bits for a 1800 16v Conversion. More on that later.

I have somehow managed to convience myself not to spend any money on wheels, i needed 3 tyres for the last MOT so i got those 4 wheels with tyres in the picture for £60 from a Seat Ibiza (VAG 4x100) but i much prefer the original Volvo steelies. I have found a guy selling a shed load of ATS 6x13 opel wheels dirt cheap so i may get some of these with lowprofile tyres.
Like these,
Like these,
On wards and upwards!
First task on the agenda was to source an engine, I thought i had come up trumps when i found a complete R19 subframe complete with loom, gearbox and lots of other R19 stuff i didn't need. It was local and i won the auction all for £50!
It was a non runner but according to the owner it was only a headgasket that had gone. So first job was to strip the head and check everything was in order.
I took the head off and this was what i found!!
Head Gasket my ass! i wasnt to fussed tho as i only payed 50 notes and i should get that back when i get round to selling the gearbox, steering rack PAS pump etc.etc.etc.

Well after a second attempt i had this. cost a little more but with 61k miles its a runner.
Well after collecting the following parts from a 1.7 i was ready to make a start.
Bellhousing
Sump
Front engine mount brackets,
1.7 Alternator bracketory.
1.7 clutch cable
1.7 clutch (to be combined with the renault cover plate)
First thing to do was find a Spigot bearing, after giving up on tryinth the local volvo dealer i decided to have a measure up and see what was available in standard bearings.
I then found these made by SKF
6062RS Rubber Sealed Deep Groove Ball Bearing 6x17x6mm
and its a perfect fit. in the crank and on the bell housing shaft.
so after bolting it all together its time to take the 1.4 out.
Que Obligatory empty engine bay shot
and a day later it looked like this.
after fitting the 1.7 clutch cable i found that due to the renualt clutch cover the fork was further back and was fouling the back of the passenger side rear engine mounting bracket. But not by much.
ATTACK!
Anyone else have to do this?
I also made up a throttle cable from a Universal kit from ebay.
so wiring, downpipe, fuel system/lines, exhaust and all the water pipes and lots of other little bits and pieces still to finish

...so you normally use the mount bracket (which bolts onto the crossmember) from a 1.7, right?
I have to say, it is a wonderfully neat fit, that F7P...and quite a pretty looking engine
cheers

tbh for the amount of effort required to modify the steel 1.4 bracket, I wouldn't realy say that its vital, but i am still yet to run the engine but the bracket is still strcturaly sound.foggyjames wrote:...so you normally use the mount bracket (which bolts onto the crossmember) from a 1.7, right?
Well the fuel lines are almost sorted, After my plan to use a Mk2 Golf GTI fuel pump/swirl pot assembly didn't work out due to the one i had being very grotty and rusted up, I changed using a big swirl pot, lift pump and Injection fuel pump.
Just waiting for some pipe adapters as the two main fitting on the swirl pot are 10mm and my pipes are 8mm and 6mm
The fuel lines themselves run down the passenger side of the inside of the car.
however for value for money i would still recomend the Golf GTI setup with a lift pump.
And My bits arrived for my new exhaust
From this: 180 degrees of bendyness
To this 2" system with only 90 Degrees of bendyness
Using a Suzuki GSXR Hyabuser silencer
I will grind/saw of the hander of the the old exhaust as they are in good nick and weld them to the new pipes.
Yay water pipes
Unfortunatly i was unable to source (no had the patience to do so) the metal pipe from the heater pipes and the fitting that goes in the back of the water pump. so i used a t-piece from the old R19 piping and made one up.
This did mean i had to chop the bottom hose and put some extenders in and run it between the crossmember and the ARB, Will keep an eye out for the proper parts tho.
ALternator Belt Fits a treat.
QH Part Number QBR6825 as fitted to the Renault Spider and some random toyota.
Oh and finished off the Fuel System.
and exhaust Minus downpipe is fitted.
Subtle
