A winter pic. :P

I had the exhaust renewed downwards from the front muffler. There's this one exhaust/manifold specialist at downtown who has done exhaust systems since the 70's so I didn't bother to assemble the exhaust from generic pieces my self as this guy bended a one piece exhaust for 80 euros while waiting.. Not much point to start welding one from pieces at that price. Bends and pieces would've probably cost almost the same alone and it wouldn't have been a 1 piece system without weld seams. :) New one is a 2.5" system like the old one.

Hi everybody,

I'm sorry I haven't been so active lately at this forum as a moderator and also as member, but my life situation has been quite hectic.. I'm doing my master's degree for MTT Agrifood Research Finland currently, which has pretty much employed me for a full day.

Also my spring has been quite hard for me personally. My father who had been ill for cancer for nine years, passed away at last saturday so I've had other things to think about than Volvos and cars recently.. Though tinkering with cars is a very good threapy for me to keep my thoughts together, so I won't be abandoning this forum in anyway.

I still have my 360 Turbo (with which I clocked 25k km at last year by the way, daily driver 8) ) and I'll be doing some fuel and oil system upgrades when I feel up to it, so I'll keep you posted and post some pics later. 8) (And I will also keep my late father's 240, which I'll be restoring some time in the future, so I might post something about that car also)

Have a nice summer everybody!

-Marko

Sorry to hear about your dad but it's good that you're putting your energies into cars - the outcome will be phenomenal I'm sure.

Sorry to hear about your dad Marko :-( I know how you feel, I was in the same situation a few years ago.

It's good to keep yourself occupied ...

Cheers

Tom

Thanks guys!

I did some work on the 360. I did a completely new bracket for the gear lever. Stock mounting with the weird bellhousing bar etc... was rotten/broken so I removed the whole bar and did a completely new bracket which mounts directly on to the car body from above. Now the gears go on sharply again. Didn't took any pics but I'll take some later when I'll re-do some stereo wiring and do some welding at the rear of the car.

I'll be replacing some fuel lines tomorrow. Few years ago I re did the main lines and used rubber hose, but that wasn't a good thing. It's fine on the straights but any bends under the car and it won't last well in the finnish winter.

So I'll be replacing everything under the car with the similiar piping as the stock ones are. Polyamide PA12 (nylon) tubing with proper connectors etc... Engine bay and connection to pump will be done with industrial grade fuel hose. I'll take some pics during the replacement. :P

Image

I also bought few meters of AN10 steel braided oil hose for the later replacement of all the oil lines. I'll be tidying up the engine bay at the same time (finally). I'll have to order proper AN fittings next.

Also the Italian made aftermarket water pump is leaking after one year and some +20k km... (Original 360 pump is not available anymore) So I bought a Volvo pump for 940. It will fit in place with the correct (deeper) pulley. I will replace the viscous fan with an electrical one also at the same time. I also ordered an alternator bracket originally found from a Volvo 740. I'll use that to move the alternator to the intake side of the engine.

I went to my brother in law's garage to do some work on the car. The idea was to change the fuel lines and tidy up the stereo wiring.

Well.. "some" holes were found from the driver's side floor above the chassis beam when the carpet was removed, so this day was pretty much welding.. :D (Don't mind the faded look, I haven't washed the car for a while.. It's going to get buffed and waxed properly after I'll get the more important stuff out of the way)

Image
Image

My cousin also visited the garage (to laugh at my welding skills :D he's a professional metalworker/machinist) This is his near mint 340 GL. It's got only 80k kilometers on the clock (about 50k miles).

Image

Interior is in perfect shape. Both lumbar supports function properly.

Image

Image

We did the welding outside as it was a nice warm day and my brother in law was doing some re-wiring and wire harness fixing on his 306 Cabrio inside.

Image
Image

This one doesn't require any welding. :P

Image

Not the prettiest seams but will do.

I started to fit the new fuel lines today. PA12 polyamide tube inside an aluminium pipe for protection. I welded nuts (lol) on to the floor where I attatched the support straps for fuel lines.

Permatex Aviation Form-A-Gasket is one of the few sealants which can withstand fuel as constant exposure.

Image

There will be more heat shielding and pipes will be wrapped on pyro jacket where the pipes/hoses cross the exhaust. I ran the previous hose inside a plastic conduit pipe from the same location so there's not that much heat around, but I'll be doing it properly this time so proper heat shields and pyro jackets will be installed.

Just caught up with this thread, sorry to hear your bad news. Interesting to see the work on the fuel lines, I need to take note as I'll be renewing some on a car I'm working on, always useful to see threads with plenty of photo's!

Thanks!

Original location for main lines is a good location also, inside the chassis beam. But as my car is a typical Finnish car, it has required some welding in that area too, so fuel hoses inside the beam are quite a fire risk when welding. :P Also it's easier to spot leaks when fuel lines are visible.

Other good material to make main lines is the hydraulic steel line or stainless steel line, but I chosed the PA12 nylon line as it's flexible and cheap, but still durable against weather and age. Some people have used copper but I think the copper lines should be made of similiar type of copper as the brake lines are made of. Some other copper types might harden from vibration and crack.

Fuel lines are ready and working perfectly. Permatex Form A gasket no.3 wasn't good enough sealant for sealing pressure with BSP threads, so I had to switch to Loctite 577. Loctite 577 is a is hardening sealant for hydraulic systems and similiar. It withstands fuels also.

No leaks and the car is running. I'll post some pics tomorrow.

keep a close eye on it, Loctite 577 can slowly deteriate and dissolve due to the petrol. if you do get problems with it, i would reccomend cleaning the fitments and use Loctite 542 and allow a 24h rest (temp at least above 0°C)

i'm also curious about the PA12 Nylon lines, we have freezing problems with 15x2mm tube for air brakes if temp regulary gets below -20°C; 8 bar blows the hoses apart
