Volvo 343 Turbo!

There it is: my first topic on V3M.
Let me short introduce myself. I'm Erik Buijs from the Netherland. blablabla........sick in my head, so: I've build a Volvo 343 Turbo.

The engines is a B18FT from a Volvo 460 turbo.
It runned for the first time 5 months ago. Standard it has 125bhp..............but it is to less. So buyed a used Garreth T3 turbo from a Cossworth. It should be good for 200+bhp. The original motormanagement goes into the trash-can en it will be replaced by KdFi (a programmeble motormanagementsystem based on a MegaSquirt V2.0-chip).
But then, there is another problem: the clutch. It this moment it uses the original clutch-plate of the Volvo 340 1.7 and the spring of the 460T. I can tell you that in the second gear I only can make a clutch-burn-out . When I will upgrade the car, the clutch has to stand at least 300Nm.
In the Netherlands I started my search for a better clutch. Costs: +/- 425 euro's. In that case, I'll double the value of the car

Anyone a cheaper solution for my problem?

I believe Sachs do a "performance" version of the 360 clutch plate, maybe they do that for the 340 as well?

EDIT: just checked, they don't, only for the 360

360 disc and 740 turbo pressure plate will cope with 300Nm..Use lighten 740 flywheel

I believe it was mk2 VW Golf 4 pad clutch that did fit to 360, but how about 440 engine?

I know that the splines of the 360 is different from that of a 340. 340 has 20-splines and the 360 has 22 or 26. With changing the flywheel the problem is not solved.

................maybe..................I have to try using the clutch-housing of a 360 and look how to fit it? Than the problem of the weak transaxle is also solved.............I think that will be hard.......

Do you have an early or late flywheel on the b18ft mate? The 480 guys when running 250nm don't think they have any trouble with a late flywheel running stock larger clutch but I don't know how much abuse they give it. Several companies here can take a stock pressure and friction plate and rebuild them to custom specs, which is what I'm looking at doing with a late clutch setup in the long run.

I actually was looking for a standard race-clutch (from another mark or type) that fits to my B18FT. Why? Because custom made clutches are more expensive I think. At this moment the lowest price is 425 euro's.

To couple back to your post: I think my engine is going to run above the 250Nm. So the original clutch won't do it.......

I think from memory thats an early, later is in the back of my mind as 215mm. Have a look round 480 club europe, there is a useful amount of information stored on there about clutches. The thing I havn't got my head round is it's mentioned that a late won't work with an early ECU, yet the trigger pattern on the 2 flywheels I have is the same, the only difference noticeable is the dowel locations for the pressure plate. On the early that I've put into the car, the stock 340 1.7 pressure plate fitted, on the late that I have for later it didn't.

For some reason, I didnt measure the outer diameter of the flywheels, but there really wasn't much in it, I seem to think I couldn't see a difference by eye.

I know EBC do an uprated clutch for the turbo but I'm sre that is teh late type. The main differnce from memory betwwen early and late (apart from friction plate dia) is the bolt spacing for teh pressure plate is changed. Best but would be to have a uprated turbo clutch made but with 340 friction plate.

But what is exactly upgraded? The diafragma-spring or the clutch-plate itself? THE problem is that the 4xx-clutchplate has another splines (26 splines I guess). The 340-plate has 20-splines. So the clutchplate of a 4xx is completely useless.

I just called my last hope in the Netherlands........They don't have any stock-plates who are ready to use for my car.
I can let them make a custom one, out of a standard plate, but they don't assure it won't break at 300Nm. So they recommend to let him build a new one: 425 euro's........pfffffff............

I just spoke to techniclutch and iain at power engineering and he recomends keeping a standard centre if you can. Iains car was running 240lb/ft so somewhere near to what you will be runnning, using standard parts is fine up to about 180bhp, but if you can get hold of a later flywheel from a turbo car it will put you in better position clutch wise as you can pu a larger centre plate in there.
When i first built my 1.8 16v i used a fiat croma centre so maybe look if a centre for that is available . Although that is a 200mm plate.

Allright: the centre-plate of a Fiat Croma has the good splines and the diameter is 200mm. I just saw that here in the Netherlands there is nothing available for the Fiat Croma. But for the Fiat Uno 1.4 Turbo; it is. And indeed: it has the 20x22,5 splines! The only thing I ask myself: can it hold 300Nm or not? (I think it will, recording to your story above) Or should I be wise and get a newer flywheel with pressureplate who can handle a 220mm centerplate?

I know that the original clutch can keep it up to 180bhp, but I maybe use the clutch to entree corners while drifting. I think an original one won't hold it long..........

Conclusion: order the sinter-plate fot the Fiat Uno 1.4?

Techniclutch told me they'd sell an uprated organic centre plate for a 340 1.7 and that they'd supply it along with a clio williams uprated pressure plate. I'm pretty sure they'll make a paddle clutch for this application if there's someone with enough cash.
