Pyro's Project 360 - ball joints -

Post by pyro » 01 Apr 2009 10:24 pm

Basically i thought id start my own project thread as it has officially started now!
A few years ago i bought a Volvo 360 gle as my first car, thats now 4 years passed and its getting to the point where it needs sorting out in a few places, welding here and there, suspension sort out, bit of a tune up. General tinkering really.

Current plans that i think my parents will disapprove of (therefore game on!) include
- maybe -1.5 suspension at the front and back
- gas front shocks - ideas?
- front strut brace
- full fluid change
- electric fan - in progress
- front engine beam replacement/welding
- maybe removing the door bump strips
- smoked lights.

Ideas tips, etc always welcome, abuse is also expected.

here how she looks at the minute

thanks - Ben

Good luck man. Just off the top of my head, are your door strips the massive thick plastic ones? If so you'll be hard pushed to get them off without severely twunting the paint on the doors. When I did the ones on my 360, they took all 193 layers of paint off right down to bare metal in places. I recommend very strong solvent and a heat gun.

i assume this has been asked before but are the 340/360 front suspension legs the same?
plan to rebuild a spare pair on the bench then swap straight over. mayaswell check the cups are good. and the top rubbers.

They are except for the late 360 ARB mountings, but these won't cause a compatibility problem AFAIK.

If the door strips won't come off easily I'd use strong fishing line or similiar to "cut/saw" the very strong tape/glue combo which is holding the thicker door strips in place so that way wou don't harm the paint. Slide the line behind the strip and start working you way towards the other end by using the line as a saw. :P Then use some solvent (something which doesn't harm the paint) to get rid of the remains of the tape.

We used a 3ft crowbar to remove them from my old 360 when I was scrapping it

Wouldn't bother removing them myself! They make the car look much narrower too

id never have thought of that!! excellent idea!

im in 2 minds as to whether to remove them. i quite like them as theyre 'useful' but theyre, fading and i like the clean lines they leave when removed.

i looks like i mgiht be changing the arb to a 340 one anyhow, to take advantage of Dai's arb link kit.

That was fun! I really like late fat 360 rubbing strips, they continue the line on from the colour coded bumpers soo nicely unlike 340 ones.

im looking for any little optional extra bits aswell

I've put a small bid in for the extra gauge panel, feel free to outbid me ...

They turn up on the bay every now and then. Pricewise - around 30 - 50 Euros for the panel, but the gauges can be really expensive. I've seen boxed 5-bar oil pressure gauges go for over 100 Euros
