Re: Volvo 340R EVO 3 Update 16/07/09 Watts Link!!

The lengths of the main 4 bars are predetermined by the car really and where the axle sits, ideally you want equal length and birectly above one another but on a 340 axle this is not very possible, bottom arm is basically half as long as a leaf spring and upper arms go to same position as anti tramp bar (But chassis beefed up to take it) So the upper bracket needed a bracket to accomodate the new arm on the axle, this is as close to the original as possible but the arms want to be straight, unlike the standard ant tramp bar so the new upper arms are located to the chassis on the other side of the rail.

As for the arms on the watts, the length of these will be determined by the position i can mount the drop boxes and with the weight on the suspension the pivot want to be perfectly upright. This then will give equal movement on suspension compression and suspension sag.

Well even though the weather pissed me around i still got a fair done. I trial fitted my Selholm Quickshift and its lovely, unfortunately there is no gearbox in the car currently. I also had trial fitment no 1 of the rear end. It looks awesome and should improve the handling no end.

Thank you, i meant the watts link offcourse, the length of the 4-links is pretty obvious.
But i didn't really get my answer. I understand that the pivot has to stand exactly 90 degrees on the dion-axle when the suspension is in neutral position. But are the 2 links also 90 degrees on the axle then? You should be able to (not easily) calculate the distance between max and neutral position (how do you call that in English??) and the exact angles of the arms to reach that.
I will paint what i mean, i can't really explain this well in words...

Mind the red curve that points out the way the axle moves.

Yes sorry i have calculated maximum suspension travel to work out where the bars will sit flat to replicate what you have said in the second drawing, i just want to test suspension travel in the real world before i make rear bars.

Re: Volvo 340R EVO 3 Update 23/07/09 Bias Pedal box...

Post by 340GLT » 23 Jul 2009 09:52 pm

Due to the crap weather i have been making my bias pedal box for the car and testing my new drill out!!! Its turned out well and will act as a bolt in replacement for the servo and MC assembly. All that is left to do is make the pivot assembly on the top of the box and brace the bottom. Anyway will let pics do the talking.

Looks good.

Would the watts linkage reduce/eliminate axle tramp?????

Yes and the biggest advantage is that by adjusting the length of the bars you can adjust the point at which the car squats. y removing the leaf springs you can run any spring poundage at any height.
Another advantage with the watts link over a panhard setup is that the axle doesnt move in a single arc, the double link on the watts helps eliminate this.
Tell you what sell me a limmy and we can do a deal....

Finished the bias box today, very pleased with the outcome, just need to remake pivot to get a smoother movement on the cylinders. I boxed the top of the box in to give strength on the pivot mounting, but i needed the balance bar to be accesable so on the bottom i braced the corners, and because i'm a bit of a tart at making things look good i rounded them....

can someone please explain a bias pedal box to me?
it looks like a technical marvel, no doubt. but without knowing what it does, im a bit lost.

Sounds like it determines breaking levels around the car?
:?

Basically instead of a single master cylinder you have two, one front and one back. The pivot point between the two cylinders is adjustable and therefore adjusts the pressure applied to the front or back cylinder. So more front less rear or more rear less front. Hence 'bias'.
So it means i can have an adjuster in the dash of the car and adjust the brake bias on the fly.

Ah. cool man. Cheers.
I was trying to work out how 4 way bias would work (per wheel), but that makes much more sense.
And is far more plausable.

Good work as ever dude.
