Front disc upgrade
Front disc upgrade
Bah, I'm afraid I'm blind. I know that it's common knowledge that there is an easy front disc upgrade for a 340 but I can't for the life of me find it. It was even discussed recently!
Any ideas peeps? Also would I need to change the callipers? Do these need modifying as well to fit?

Re: Front disc upgrade
I can't remember either, but thats because i took the easy option of just upgrading the discs, BlackDiamond do them off the shelf but not cheap being around £80.

Re: Front disc upgrade
Heya,
Not been around here for a while....
AFAIK there's no EASY upgrade for the front - I required a bit of head scratching to get vented disks on there.
It's 'simply' just a case of fitting the disks, choosing a caliper that will work with the disks, and making an adaptor which will allow the caliper to locate into the correct position with respect to the disk and onto the strut.

Re: Front disc upgrade
these fit right away, but are not vented, only drilled

Re: Front disc upgrade
Are they any good? I'm happy with the current braking power, its just brake fade that scares me

Re: Front disc upgrade
The are some nice looking disks on ebay by mintbitz, grooved and dimpled. I Havn't tried them yet though. I've only experience of 360 standard kit and hammering that.

Brake fade can be an issue, make sure your brake fluid is the best you can get and no more than 2-3 years old. You also need good condition and quality disks and pads. If you are really hammering it you might try a brake fluid circulation/cooling add-on. It uses the bleed nipple as a return feed
You might also find upgrading the rears to 360 spec will help.

Re: Front disc upgrade
Yeah rear 360 drums was always an option but too much of a hassle right now. If I was gonna do it, may as well stick discs on. I hate those rear hubs. Before I think about doing that though the front brakes need to be stronger. The cooling idea sounds cool, also epic fail on the fluid front, it's full of hellfrauds best at the moment
Looks like I'll have to wait a while then, need to get to A52 in Bristol to get this kinda thing done...
As for those ebay discs, nice one! I'll give those a go once the suspension project is over

Re: Front disc upgrade
The rear drums are fine when in good condition, its just so many cars are neglected or sit unused for long periods, rear brakes hate that. The 360 rears are also a bit more robust than the 340 ones.

Re: Front disc upgrade
As said BlackDiamond do grooved like mine, or you can go drilled, grooved and vented but they are over £100 but it's an easy off the shelf part.
If anything with my grovved ones you don't get fade as they get hot, they just bite harder

Re: Front disc upgrade
So you can get ones that are all three? drilled, grooved and vented off the shelf to fit the front without altering calipers?magnumpi wrote:As said BlackDiamond do grooved like mine, or you can go drilled, grooved and vented but they are over £100 but it's an easy off the shelf part.

Re: Front disc upgrade
I think not?
A vented disk is much 'thicker', how should this match with the original capilers?
I have the drilled ones of the pic I posted, I haven't tested them yet (are still in the box
) But other people were enthousiastic about those combined with ferodo DS2500 pads.

Re: Front disc upgrade
My bad then, they were however very helpful when i rang them so might be worth giving a go.
They do Predator pads aswell which i fitted and i'm pretty impresed with them.

From the box pic it appears you can get all 3, or is it a case that if you have drilled, vented and grooved they just don't fit a standard Volvo caliper?
