MJ have you driven a 300 series PAS car? It is by far the best system I've experienced, it strikes a very good balance between weighty and assistance and it's easy to forget its there compared to most newer cars I've driven... I know you've driven an 850 and I'd imagine that to be just as light and over assisted as my S40...
300's are light, and I'd agree about weight saving - there's little point! My S40 feels no better built than the 360, although is a fair bit quieter most likely due to soundproofing - but then it does weigh ~250kg more!
PAS problems
No, I haven't driven a PAS 300, so I'll take your word for it that it's probably better than the 850, which to be fair is a lot better that the Renault Megan my driving instructor had back when I was learning. That was horrible...
The 850 isn't bad at speed, and I guess not much lighter than the 340, it's just at low speed when manoeuvring that PAS really bothers me. I know that's when it's meant to be useful, but it just annoys me

MJ makes a fair point...the 850/70 series aren't at all bad for being over-assisted. The 2/7/900 series are pretty nuts like that. It's nice in a luxury car, but not in a performance car.
