tyre question, snow

hey guys, i have a question about different tyres on snow.
someone told me that narrow tyres have better traction on snow/ice. i'd like the front tyres to grip in corners and the rear tyres to have good traction for accelerating on snow
can i put new 165/75R13 on front when i'm having used 175/70R13 (about 5-6mm tread left, 4 yrs old) on rear?
will this cause understeer on snowy or icy conditions? i'd rather like the car to oversteer because i find it more predictable.

Snow tyres?
The thinner tyres = more grip I think only works in linear actions. That setup would understear so I'd rock the 175s on the front

But most of all I'd get snow tyres

they have a lot of hills where i live so snow tyres are essential
i can also get new 175s but i want to know how different tyre widths relate.
i'd buy 165s for front when it will give me better grip on snow than 175s would and if it doesnt matter w/ wider rear tyres

If you are using 175/70x13 tires now the next size thinner, for the same speed indication on your speedometer, would be 155/80x13. For using different sizes on the car, always use the thinnest in the front, but when using snow tires I would advise the same size front and back and the thinnest recommended stock size for the best grip and traction

The previous owner of my GLT especially added 155s to the car's papers so he could use them as winter tyres ... I've heard narrower is better too, but it sure does make a GLT look weird

I've seen full house Group4 Escort BDXs on Otterburn ranges in snow running 155x13 frt and 175x13 rr.
They had 300hp so your volvo will be fine.
