I have an 87' 340GL and i understand like other 300's it has a rubber coupling in the steering column how can we go about eliminating this from the steering? has anyone got any better solutuions than having a solid metal equivlant made?
Thanks

Re: Steering vibration damper
Why would you want to? There is no backlash or slop in a new steering damper. If the steering feels vague, there are several other things that can cause it

Re: Steering vibration damper
I want as direct steering as possible.
All polybushed up front atm and i dont want any slop up front at all, I might try a new one tho theres only one on ebay atm for a tenner.
Why would you want a chunk of rubber between your steering inputs and the rack?
if only vibration dampening, i dont care about this the car has changed purpose from a cheap runabout to cheap skid mobile.

Re: Steering vibration damper
gsfcarparts.com did them recently, I would hope they still do.
Unless the damper is faulty it will be pretty solid, the problem can be a worn rack (in the middle), make sure the pre-load is adjusted to a good compromise, but if its sticky at the ends and clunky in the middle you will need a re-furb.

Re: Steering vibration damper
iirc they have a thin metal plate inside them. They are there to allow some flex and also a point for colapse under impact. That is a very important fact for competition use where there is a risk of crashing.

Re: Steering vibration damper
Thanks for the great replies, hadn't considered it as collapasble rack component, good point.
To be fair my rack is fine and the damper is pretty good I just wanted rid as soon as I learned of its exsistance
Are there any other rack options for the 340? its about 4.4 turns lock to lock and I'd like to get that down.
