Quality brake disks

Post by Ride_on » 04 Feb 2012 08:40 pm

Just been researching brake disks for my 940 recently, cracked and warped fubar, looking for a good quality replacement that will not corrode as much with my lowish miles these days, but still hold up with fast road driving.

I've found we have a good lowish cost manufacturer in N.I.... MTEC. Looks very professional and recommended by some on volvoforums.co.uk

You can order disks from the web site and decide what finish you want.. either raw, black or silver. The coating wears off but still protects the non-friction surface. I guess thats what others like tarox and black diamond have been doing for a while but they are very expensive. Probably more important for the vented 940 disks than the 300 ones, but they do list 300 disks.

940 ones are £55/pair delivered on ebay, although the web site is £71.. strange. No option for coating on ebay, but £14 on the web site (additional extra).

300 ones are £64 only on the web site, but am hoping they will do cheaper.

All seem to drilled and grooved.

Anybody heard about these? used coated disks?

Well if the reviews are good over on VOC I'd be tempted to get some myself. £64 isn't bad for grooved discs.

Its possible the ebay site is non-official. They all show the same picture of drilled and grooved, but the descriptions are different (possibly a bit of misrepresentation there), 300 is not listed on ebay anyway. On the company website you get to choose any style of disk (although coating is extra) so I guess the extra machining is included in the cost, but not on ebay perhaps.

There is also a redemption code to enter, so I'll see if I can wangle a code for forum users.

Well the MTEC ebay site is official, and they will support the 940 pricing at about £15 less than the web listing with grooves and stuff. Still trying to sort the 940, too many variations, but will see what price they will do the 300's after that.

Well got the disks for the 940, seem ok, not exactly custom packaging, bubble wrap basically.

Bit disappointed in the coating, would call it paint really, looks like high temp brake paint and its been sprayed so the vent vanes are not well coated which is what I was looking for to prevent corrosion and loss of strength. Seems to be more cosmetic. A coating to me means a chemical coating, dipped. Suppose its worth the £14,but could have done it myself and have paint left over.

Ah probably just a typically cheap make then, maybe time will tell? Alternatively you could always go buy some paint now and touch up the areas?

Bastard! Don't say they are cheap, I've bought them now :-)

I have the paint, you just can't spray the inside of tunnels well.

Well completed bedding in and hammered the 940 up over the hills tonight, brakes are sh1t! After a few minutes got fading and piles of smoke, probably need to replace the fluid. Used to be alot better than that.

Calipers read up around 100C, disk 200C after cooling using non-contact IR meter. Paint on the edge of the disk had turned white, very disappointing, shall be contacting Mtec.

Some new parts, painted calipers with new seals and braided flexi's still to go on, so new fluid will go in then.
