If you don't already know, I bought this car :-
http://www.volvo300mania.com/forum-uk/v ... 0&start=15
When advertised, it was stated that the driveshaft>gearbox coupling had given way.
About a week ago, I started the car, depressed the clutch and tried a gear ... Nothing happened, BUT, it did feel clunky, gears not selecting properly etc.
Anyway, today, I have jacked the car up and I spun the rear wheels, expecting the other sides to move in the opposite direction, but they are not, please have a look at this video :-

Now, what I have come to the conclusion is, that the gearbox/diff has gone ?
I visiually checked the coupling, and all is OK, so don't know where Adam got the idea the coupling had broken ?
Your thoughts?
Thanks

Hmm, definitely looks like diff failure. Have you had the back casing off to have a look?
Failing that, just whip the gearbox/diff assembly off. Its all one unit, so isn't too bad to remove.

Give neighbours thumbs up
Rev engine to 7K

It's early in the morning... so forgive anything silly. Only one wheel was moving in that vid? In which case, what happened when you put some resistance on that moving wheel?

Re: Help needed re drivetrain ..
Nothing, it would stop. It was only moving as I spun it. I also did the same to the other wheel, and it does exactly the same.
So change the gearbox/diff is the order of the day, which is what I thought.

Diffs gone by the looks of it, stripped the teeth off the suns and planets are my guess. Why it was clunky going into gear i have no idea Thomas............
Re: Help needed re drivetrain ..
That is my best guess tbh (not knowing the terms for diff parts) but that the diff is shagged, Will open the rear of the casing next week when I get a chance next.
Now need to source a gearbox/diff ...... Are there any other boxes/diffs that will fit apart from a 300 series ?

Short answer, yes, long answer, how much money and time do you have?Nate wrote:That is my best guess tbh (not knowing the terms for diff parts) but that the diff is shagged, Will open the rear of the casing next week when I get a chance next.

Theres no bolt in bolt out swap for the transaxle in the 340/360's best just to replace the diff and be done with it Any 5 speed diff off a 340 or 360 will fit Thomas..........
