Strut and shock combo

Guys, just put in my KYB gas shocks. I noticed when taking off the hex part( the bit that holds the shock in the strut) it appeared to have a piece of metal in the top of this. The new ones provided with the KYB shock do not have this. Does anyone know if is piece of metal is a) important b) needed or c) Volvo original or just a DIY fix from the previous owner.
