what's going on with my brake master cylinder

Post by CBA » 27 Jan 2013 06:33 pm

Sit-rep

Took off front o/s hose, removed rear brake pipe (from valve under spare tyre to rear n/s flexi-hub)
-Left it like that, all the fluid drained naturally.(i know...)

fitted front hose yesterday, fitted new rear pipe today.

on bleeding(refilling whole system) the master cylinder is making a grinding noise on pumping and sometimes won't fully return without pulling the pedal up.
grinding comes and goes, a few times it was smooth.

is this just due to a dry 'front' section of the cylinder (cause I can't bleed front as I found a rounded off bleed nipple(have one ordered))?.

-the weather! :( jeez

It is caused by the following

In normal use the cylinder is only moving in a short area of teh chamber so tends to leave a slight wear rigde. When you are then bleeding the system the piston can catch on the ridge.

Once teh system is bled out it should act like normal but might be worth thinking about replacing it.

what size are the front bleed nipples? (span, thread depth/width).
one is rounded, so I'm replacing both.
