HUB NUT?
Re: HUB NUT?
Do NOT use a nylock for the front wheel bearings.
I. Grease will eventually degrade the pu friction ring.
2. Brake heat (the disc is bolted to the hub) will soften and destroy the locking capability.
Taper roller wheel bearings should be adjusted to give a running clearance and secured with a mechanically locked nut either a "castle" nut (if the stub axle is drilled for a split pin) or, as in the 300 a stake nut.
If a bearing kit is supplied with a nylock I would, personally question the quality of the bearings themselves.

Re: HUB NUT?
The bearing kit is made by front line. That's annoying news about the hub nut; I cant get a stake nut on its own from anywhere. Fortunately I have the stake nut that's still on there and two others, all of which have been staked a few times but Im sure one of them will work.

Re: HUB NUT?
The problem with a stake nut is it will always do up to the same place as last time. Hence you'll have to stake the same place as last time.

Re: HUB NUT?
Update: A Danny Muijtjens from Dafhobby just replied to my recent email and said he can supply me with said nut for £1.75 and that he could post it in an envelope!
I will definitely be contacting him in the near future whenever I need a part...
(Many thanks to Mac aswell for helping me out, it is gratefully appreciated)

Re: HUB NUT?
Correct nuts in post tomorrow Justin.
If Danny's nut is like the one I've heard he includes in his wheel bearing kits it may well be a nylock - this is however hearsay and if I do him a disservice I apologise.

Re: HUB NUT?
I think a nyloc may come under the new MOT rules as not meeting the manufacturers original specification and being 'an inappropriate suspension/braking modification'. Its not so bad for general suspension nuts and Volvo did change to nyloc in some locations later on, but as Mac says this location has more engineering considerations and you would have to do a lot of work to confirm that it would be reliable and safe.
The MOT man may not find it but it is a good rule for arguing with suppliers who supply rubbish parts. I recently got new front hubs for the 940 from various sources. 1 came from GSF, Vetech branded and had a short bearing packed out with non-bearing packer. It would have fitted but there would clearly have been significantly different forces on it leading to early or catastrophic failure. I eventually got them to pay for the return aswell as a proper refund.
As a general rule parts should at least meet the orginal specification.

Re: HUB NUT?
Thanks Mac & Ride-On. I will email danny in due course to find out whether his nuts (please forgive the pun) are nylock or not?
My bearing has been replaced as of this morning; the mechanic is an old boy who has guaranteed his work. Apparently when he set the correct torque he was able to stake the nut in a different place but said he will happily put the fresh nut on when it arrives...

Thanks Chris, Im lucky that I've found an old school mechanic who is honest and good at his job; Ok he's more expensive than a lot of mechanics I've used but I guess you get what you pay for?...

Re: HUB NUT?
That is true.
FWIW, the only source for stake nuts I'm aware of is in SKF kit VKBA 502. Comes with free bearings One kit needed per side (no comments, Mac!). I managed to get a couple of sets at a very good price recently.
If the nut comes loose, it'll wear aware your outer brake pad, so it's worth spending the money to avoid having to buy new pads!
cheers
James

Re: HUB NUT?
SKF = Svenska KullagerFabriken AB
A major Swedish manufacturer of primarily bearings (the name means "Swedish Ball Bearing Co.") In engineering circles you will come across the term "Skefco number" which is an identifying code on each bearing - all manufacturers have such numbers but SKF is used in the way that vacuum cleaners are called " hoovers" and ball tip pens are called "biros")
Of note, Volvo originally was a company owned by SKV (Volvo means "I roll" in Latin) and when two SKF employees began to build cars in 1926 they acquired the name for their fledgling company. (the first Volvo model, the OV4, was launched in 1927).
