Been Tinkering

Post by Cliché Guevara » 11 Sep 2013 01:52 am

Hey All,I read on this forum somwhere that someone was going to try to adapt Mk2 Golf front struts to fit on our beloved Volvos.I've searched but cant find the thread. However, yesterday I was tinkering in the garage with some Mk2 struts that I had laying about and found that it would be a p@ss easy conversion that could be done 2 different ways.

If anyone else has done this please let me know.

What's the height difference? and stiffness? could be quite an interesting mod to go with my changed rears.

The stiffness will depend on how you go about it.Original volvo inserts dont fit into the vw units but the monroe inserts for the volvo do.Make the vw spring retaining cup fit over the insert then the volvo topmount and bearing will bolt to the top of that. The downfall of doing it this way is that you are still relying on the availability of volvo topmounts.

Second method which is the way that I think would be best.Use the original 3 holes in the volvo turret and mount a simple retaining cup.The vw unit can then bolt on using the original vw turret cap.The vw units that I have are like the old volvo ones.As in they are able to be emptied and refilled with thicker oil,but mk1 and 2 golfs have pretty stiff suspension to start with.As for ride height they look shorter but I have no data yet.But there is a world of artermarket stuff available for golfs and the topmounts are available off the shelf.I will post pics as I tinker some more.

But you still have the problem of making the bottom ball joint fit, the track rod end and how are you going to fit the speedo cable?

Use the vw bottom ball joint (if the volvo one doesn't fit.I've not tried it yet)and the volvo track rod end fits the vw hub.As for the speedo cable, the golf hub is a front wheel drive unit so there is access to the rotation for the cable.
Early days,I'll keep you all posted and listen to any input.

I have a bottom VW ball joint fitted to a Volvo bottom arm.I now need to take a trip to my local scrappy where my wifes old Golf is languishing.I will remove the turrets so that I can salvage the mounting cups. Then I will see how the cups can be fitted to the Volvo turrets.A third option could also be the use of a slightly modified VW wishbone which looks stronger than the Volvo bottom arm.

Those of you that are familiar with Golf suspension might be wonder what I'm on about. But when you have both VW and Volvo units beside each other it looks very straight forward.

My efforts at the moment are still focussed mainly on getting the wife's 360 back on the road but any spare time will be spent with this little brain fart.

I don't know how modified suspension components are looked upon here. if you did that it may require a cert.
