You could also bolt the strut into a wheel, stand on the back of the wheel with it flat on the ground and use plumbers shifters

Awesome idea. I'll get me mother to do that ;-0... She's a good engine hoist too, I jest again and I agree its not the best use for a walking stick but that one was lost in the wilds for a few months (a bit forgetful since the last hospital stay) so that stick's past its best...
