1WD rear drum stuck on
My rear right wheel will not rotate at all, so car jacked up wheels off and run it in gear and it won't move at all. When I apply the brake it spins fine but only when the brake is on which I know is the diff doing its job properly which leads me to believe it is definitely something to do with the brakes.
I took the drum off which was tight, completely slackened the shoes off, filed the edge of the shoes off and tried again and no difference. I can spin the hub freely by hand with the drum off but with it on it won't move at all.
So, suggestions please.
I have also sanded down the shows a little and the drum and cleaned with meths.

This has just suddenly happened? Not related to fitting new shoes or anythng?
Need to see pictures of the internals with the drum off.
The shoes are too far out, either the adjuster is stuck or the piston siezed.
I assume its a 360.

I have a feeling it has been like it for a while as when I first took the drum off a few months ago it was like this but I never got around to checking it until yesterday.
I haven't fitted anything new yet, I have ordered a set of drums as they are above the maximum diameter anyway and a set of new shoes so if they are at fault it will be sorted with that.
I also have a set of new wheel cylinders that I got in an auction when I wanted a new rear view mirror so again if that is the fault it will be cured.
I have wound the shoes all the way in and there isn't any slack in the adjuster so I didn't think it was at fault but could it still be?
I will get a photo of it in a bit.

Hi,
may be your brake hoses have swelled up, so the liquid is pressed into the wheel cylinder when operating the break,
but flowing back is inhibited.
Can happen, when the hoses are quiet old...

I will take a look, I looked at the MOT history last week and the last MOT it had an advisory was the rear right brake hose starting to perish.ralf850gle wrote:Hi,

It should flow back when the pedal is not pressed. Also there is only 1 flexi for the back axle, so it would affect both drums at the same time.
If the adjuster has been wound back in it should not be a problem and the drum should fit on easily. The 360 adjuster rarely sticks, something could also be wrongly assembled.

This is how to test the adjuster by levering the screw driver handle to the right against the hub and adjusting arm. You should see the ratchet rotating clearly.

Just did the adjuster test and it works perfectly.

Nothing major I can see on the photos, looks right.
Thoughts;
-right shoe seems to be sitting a bit low, should be free to move anyway
-adjuster is not all the way home (after testing?)
-make sure its the right side adjuster, they are sided with opposite threads or ratch directions (testing should have eliminated this).
-Watch the little spud on the flat black plate (vertical spring attached to this) that engages with the adjuster fork and drives the ratchet, I had a problem with this because the fork was a little worn and it got stuck in the wrong place. The spud should stop it falling into the fork, but sometimes it doesn't. can't remember any more details, but it might have prevented the shoes pulling fully in, or it might not have adjusted properly.

I think the shoe is sat low because a couple days ago when I wound them all the way in I gave it a tap to make sure it had adjusted.

As far as I can tell the fork is seated correctly.
I have fitted the drum again and managed to spin it by hand but it got stuck at a certain point so I used a pry bar to go past this point and it span again until it reached the same point.
Could the drum be oval?

Maybe, but it would be very unusual. Also thinking about the handbrake, how is the joiner/adjuster above the torque tube? Siezed?
I'm wondering why when you tested it off the ground did the right brake not work.
Also maybe just badly shaped shoes.

Sorry if already mentioned but I can't remember if the 360 is like the 340 and has a lever plate mechanism, part of which passes through the backplate. Its good at seizing-up at the pivot points, as I found out my Petrol Blue and on colin340's car, a la blog ;-0
The 360 is different isn't it but maybe the equivalent mechanism is dodgy. The only other very mysterious brake problem I had was caused by incorrect adjustment of the rod out of the servo into the master cylinder. The brakes jammed on when hot because the fluid wasn't recirculating and hot brake fluid not allowed to flow back into the reservoir is as good as the driver's right foot at stopping the car ;-0

I will have to check on the pistons, need someone to press the brake for me.
The adjuster is fine, I adjusted it a while ago as the handbrake was a struggle to get 3 clicks and it was fully on at 1 click. So now it is 5 clicks and is fully on at 3.
There are score marks on the shoes and a it in the drum if that has anything to do with it.

The brake is stuck on full stop so it wouldn't be hot brake fluid.

Just push the pistons in with your fingers or large grips. One side will probably push out if you push the other in.
If the shoes aren't in don't push them too much or the other side might pop out.
