360 GLT raising the beast a bit

Post by martinp » 20 Feb 2017 12:52 pm

Hi All rather than hijacking an old post here is a new one.
I've been wanting to raise the front and rear an inch or two and now have the means/parts to do it.
I ordered new strut cartridges today 87-93 Toyota Camry front shocks slightly longer than standard as the old shocks are shot.
Looks like 240 rear springs will fit the front once cut down slightly which will raise it an inch.
I will put some rubber (about 12-25 mm thick) on top of the strut to lift the body up a bit.
This should give me the required inch or two of height at the front - hopefully the front end won't be too far off from being right.
I am using the car for a shitbox rally where you take a car worth less than $1000 across Australia (Adelaide to Cairns via Alice Springs 3800kms) mostly on gravel/dirt outback roads.
The rear I have a pair of old holden bolt on over-rider springs which will raise it a little once we have all our camping gear in plus beer plus extra fuel plus extra beer. With all the extra weight it should pull the car down to just a little above standard height.
Hopefully this works for me.
Cheers.
Martin.

I think the GLT has shorter shocks than all other 300s, so if you can get any other models shocks it should be higher. The GLE rear springs will also raise the back by an inch.

I have a set of normal leaf spring, I believe the GLT leaf springs are an inch different so the car will sit lower in the GLT's, I would be happy to swap my leaf springs for the GLT left springs :)

I did it!
Photos to come yet.
I cut some rubber (spare bits from work!!!) and put it on top of the top strut mounts which raised the car about an inch.
I also modified the top of the strut mount as I used a 92-97 camry strut which I had to turn down a bit to fit my new design.
I have access to a lathe and lots of bits.
It was easy to do if you have the skills or pay someone to do it.
Ended up raising it an inch for $114 AUD (strut cost) I used the old springs again which seem OK - a bit soft but OK.
Now for the back end. But I am away for a long weekend tomorrow so that will happen later....
I will try to post my drawings of what I did as it may help someone one day.

Sorry Kennet I have been very slack and not posted how to do it. I have also missplaced my little drawing I made of how to modify a front shock out of a Camry V6. Very similar I just needed a different nut for the top but machined up a 30mm bolt head with part of the bolt shaft on it and tapped out the innards to suit and also machined out the bush on the top bit of the strut which bolts to the top of the car. You need to bend each of the three lugs on it to allow the bolts to align up. (put the bolts in and place the heads next to the top of the strut and you will see what I mean - they are bent out a bit to suit what is there now).
As you can see in the pic of the top of the strut you can just see some of the rubber which I used to raise the thing. I used two pieces 12mm thick. This gave it a 24-20mm lift due to the compression of the rubber. I put Corrola rims on which are 13" allowing me to fit an oversized tyre on it (commercial ones - with no traction!) which gave me another bit more height of about 20mm.
