Power Steering Cranking Noise
Hi there! I´ve been hearing a cranking noise while turning right when the car is not moving. If i put the hand at the bottom of the steering column (where it connects to the power steering gear) i feel the clonk clonk there. The liquid of the direction is dark black!! It looks like used motor oil. Could this be the reason of the noise? One think to take into account is that if i jack up the car from the left side (all the weight is charged on the right side of the car) and i turn right nothing sounds... I´ve changed inner and outer tie rod ends, the suspension ball joints and the suspension links on both sides.
I´m not a mechanic but this sound is driving me crazy!!!

Re: Power Steering Cranking Noise
Probably a good idea to change the fluid if it's that colour, but the noise might well be the suspension strut top mounts - they can get noisy after a time, especially on 360's with the heavier engines.

Steve first of all thanks for answering man!Probably a good idea to change the fluid if it's that colour, but the noise might well be the suspension strut top mounts - they can get noisy after a time, especially on 360's with the heavier engines.
I first thought on strut top mounts but i put my hand on the top of the suspension and didnt feel any vibration while turning so thats why i discarded them, but dont know... With all the tie rod ends removed if i move the wheel with my hands theres no sound so this also makes me suspect of the steering instead of the struts.
I also noticed the bump stop rubber (topes de suspension in spanish) had passed away

Re: Power Steering Cranking Noise
Hmm in that case I think the next step would be to try and replicate the noise with the power steering belt removed, that would rule out anything to do with the pump and pinpoint it to either parts of the rack assembly or column.
If you can replicate it reliably see if you can record a video of the noise? They're always so hard to describe!

Re: Power Steering Cranking Noise
I´ll try to upload a video. But, i dont feel the vibration at the pump, whatsmore i also feel the vibration and hear the noise even with the motor turned off so i think the pump is okay because with the motor off i think it doesnt work!SteveP wrote: ↑06 May 2021 09:42 amHmm in that case I think the next step would be to try and replicate the noise with the power steering belt removed, that would rule out anything to do with the pump and pinpoint it to either parts of the rack assembly or column.
