I need a pre 85 brake master cylinder

Post by Ronnie » 03 Nov 2005 06:44 pm

Bugger, I bought a classic car...

My master cylinder is shot. Bought a new one listed for years 83-90, but they lied and it doesn't fit. I need one with a little heat shield bolted on it which fits into the older, small diameter vacuum unit.

I can find exactly five thousand post 85 units from friendly neighbourhood outlets like German & Swedish. However, to get an older unit I need to raid a museum in Oslo and spend enough money to buy myself an S80.

Can anyone recommend a source for ancient 300 parts?

All the best

Ronnie

could you convert the whole brake system over to a post-85 unit?

failing that, just look round scrapyards

Not a bad idea to just fit a later vacuum unit, and bolt in the new master cylinder. But won't know how difficult it will be until I have it all in bits, and by then it might be too late. I'm pushed for time. Scrap yard is probably not a good idea. It's the rubber seals in my M/C that have gone - and scrap ones are likely to be just as bad.

Many thanks for your input anyway!

I assume the 340 one is identical to the 360? Does the later vacuum servo unit bolt straight in? Any mods or fudges required? many thanks again people

not sure, look to see if the parts (on eurocarparts etc) suit 340s and 360s as well

Now sorted. I spent the wonga in the end and sourced a direct replacement part via Volvo (ouch).

It's very nice to now be able to use the brakes for longer than 5 seconds without pumping them! sm43
