400 wheels on 300s

Post by SteveP » 19 Oct 2004 12:19 am

Hi,

Well I've decided I'm going to get a set of 440 alloys for the 360. I just wondered how this can be done. I realise the 440 has wheel bolts (I think) and the 360 has wheel nuts. Anyone know if you can use 360 wheel nuts on 400 alloys ok?

Cheers,

Steve

As far as I am aware, the wheels are basically identical. There is some suggestion that the offset may vary by about 4mm, but that isn't enough to worry about, and there's no indication about which way it applies...so I ignored it.

The 300 series alloy nuts are a perfect fit for the 400 series rims, but beware of deep locking nuts, as these won't clear the bolt-covers on wheels with 'hub caps' (like mine).

Just to make things extra sweet, the tyres are the 'same' size from 300 > 400. I say 'same' because the tyres on a 360 GLT and a 360 GLE (carb) are a different size (I'm talking overall effective size, not 185/60 or whatever), but by less than 1%. As with all tyre calculations, it'll almost certainly never be exactly right, but you'll get near enough.

Just don't get Canis rims :-P :)

cheers

Cheers James, just wanted to confirm it with someone in the know

Don't worry I'm not getting the same rims as yours :P I'll be getting them Anteres alloys that I was talking about before, not what I was really looking for but they should look good all the same.

Should be able to get them on before the meet

Good luck dude! I'd be tempted to get some different ones from everybody's favourite auction site...but at least with the Antares you're unlikely to be copied!!

Well I would spend a bit more time looking around, but finding these at a very good price and condition, with good make tyres locally I can't really miss the opportunity.

Just got an email from the seller, should be going to see them over the weekend. So all being well, they'll be mine! :D

Excellent news! Be sure to post up some pics...

What size are they? 14s or 15s?

cheers

Well unfortunately they're 14s, 15s look 'right' on the 300s, but they should still look ok - I can't grumble for the price, and I really need better tyres. Wheel spinning in the rain 2day even when being careful!

I'll stick some pics up when they're on if all goes well with getting them. Dunno when I'll get round to actually putting them on - I don't have a nice garage to work in, and this rain is a pain in the arse!

Tell me about the rain...I don't have anywhere to work on the car at uni, and as a result of that there may be a few 'works in progress' for the meet...

Well, picked the Anteres alloys up today, look very nice - have all the centre caps with Volvo logos, unusually haven't faded which I've seen on a few 440s - virtually like new. Tyres are also in good condition, and good makes with good tread on 2 and like new on the other two. I'd post some pics up but they're still in the car, I don't fancy bringing them in just yet as its still pi@#ing it down!

I think they may possibly be featuring in a 'music' video I have to make for an assignment at uni... changing the wheels over to the old F1 theme tune (Fleetwood mac - the chain). I don't have any other ideas, how do they expect us to film anything remotely creative in this weather!?

I better stop now...!

I'm still not much of a fan of that style of rim....but you just can't complain for the money (especially as they came with good tyres I think?) - and diversity is the key anyway. I mean if everyone had alloys as gorgeous as mine....Arf arf! ;-) The car looks damn sweet, and you're quite right, its an improvement on the late-style GLT alloys - possibly another candidate for the worst bit of 300 series design!?

I think its time I started planning the 17s I want for Nessy....
