240 4pots and carlton vented discs (again)

Hi,

Trying to find a definitive answer to the possibility of this upgrade, I am sure one or two have done it and want to know if it really is a "bolt on" affair when using the right carlton vents.

Basically I'm hoping to bring the other brake upgrade threads together and would really love anyone who has successfully completed these upgrades to give info (and pics) on the process.

Cheers

Jason

Well I have been told that carlton discs are nowhere near bolt on.

problem is that in normal cars discs bolt to outside of hub (wheel side) when in 300 they bolt to inside of hub (engine side), so that pretty much eliminates possibility of finding discs by looking wheel bolt pattern.

My understanding was that they were about the right dimensions, but the bolt holes would need re-drilling.

This could be very well true, best would be if someone would have Volvo disc on table and take pics + measurement from there, then it would be only needed to measure candidates :)

calipers bolt straight on don't they? so it is only a question of finding the correct size vents to fit

If you use www.needforspeed.co.uk It is helpful by listing disk dimension on the EBC brake disks, i used this to find mine!!!

The BMW E30 325 front brake conversion I have has the discs bolted to the outside of the hub, and extended studs. The calipers are attached to the 'knuckle' via an adaptor.

Honestly, I think the way forward here is to fit discs to the outside of the hub. Rear-mounted discs are a bit too wierd, limiting choice. Then it's a case of finding nice calipers (I'm probably heading for some Wilwoods) and making the brackets to bolt them up. Perhaps Adam can comment on his design process, but that's how I'm planning to approach it....once I've reached the limits of the stock brakes ;)

cheers

TBH i cant fault my conversion. The prob with fitting the disk to the putside is you are transfering the weight distribution away from the centre of the hub.

What's a few grams between friends ;) Nothing you can't offset with some nice light wheels, right Adam ;)

More worrying, has anyone done some kind of force calcs on the bracket adapters? Thats the only thing stopping me from doing a front caliper conversion, I'm damn worried that I'll hit the pedal one day and it'll fracture the adapter bracket!

Adam, what did you make yours out of?

Mate if you think bout it this way, My brackets are made out of steel the same thickness as the lobes on the strut leg so thye are very unlikely to break!! I never did any force calculations mate, but i'm sure volvo did so all i have done is make brackets from same material. Steel!!

Hmmm, man makes good point, make bracket thicker than struct leg ;)

All you are doing with the bracket if you think about it, is extending the mounting points on the strut.
