If the wheel is pulled towards the wheel arch when turning..

Post by Pappa » 15 Apr 2008 07:54 pm

If the wheel is pulled towards the wheel arch when I'm turning the car to the left, can this be due to a broken steering rod? The wheel is also pointing too much to the left although I've adjusted the toe-in all the way in and replaced the steering rod end.

Or am i looking at something bent or broken in the suspension?
I've collided with my left wheel against a pavement edge going around 30mph..

Maybe one of these outlined in red are bent in towards the chassis, causing the wheel to point to the left and scrape against the wheel arch when turning left?

Is it "safe" if i just remove a wishbone from a donor 340 and attach on to mine? I assume a wishbone apart from the bushings doesn't get worn the way shocks and springs does ?

It could be a few things so check first before buying.

The front hub axle could be bent.
The lower suspension arm may be bent or creased.
The rubber bushes may be shot in the suspension arm or other components connected to it.
The steering rack may have skipped a notch or damaged.
Steering rod damaged.
Broken bolts in lower suspension.
(worst case scenario is damaged chassis at lower suspension arm connection, but highly unlikely)

I had to check all of these when my dad took his car in to a kerb and then in to a 2 foot high concrete wall and in to the air eventually landing on it's side at about 45 mph. Made for some fun inspections but apart from the bodywork damage the only fault at steering was like what you have and it was the rack that took the knock and slight crease in lower suspension arm. Luckily I was able to just have to do some adjustment to the allignment and all has been fine for the last, close on 2 years and MOT's perfectly.

Replacing parts with secondhand ones is fine as long as they are in good condition but if you use anything with bushes in them then changing these is a good idea and will be easier while it's already off the car.

If you are going to replece both or those parts make sure you also take the bracket that the round arm goes through as these often rot and could have bent.

I think Morgan has listed most of teh posibilitys there

Yes and I'll try checking every one of them.. Although everything seems just fine to the naked eye from underneath, nothing looks bent.. I'll try taking the rubber sleeves off the steering rods and compare, but i have a bad feeling it's something else due to the wheel scraping against the body when turning left..
