340 steering bits

Post by nicksonmotorsportltd » 25 Jan 2009 11:18 pm

hi people, have just today picked up my 340 1.7 have a 180bhp williams engine to drop in. but first wanna get the thing handling right. it has been lowered etc, i will have to get it up on the ramps and see exactly what has been done already.
when drivin home the steerin didnt feel great esecially around the centre point. the wheels sort of felt like they were steering themselves unless u actually positivly steered it. also only very small amounts of turn were needed to steer the car round slight bends.
do i just need to check all the bushes and mounts etc, or does it sound like i need new rack/box etc.
any1 got ideas on the best suspension setup for drifting.
cheers, will get some pics up of the project as it progresses.

Yeah sounds like loose ball joints to me. First check tie rod outer joint, then suspension arm ball joint, then tie rod inner joint. If all of those are in good condition, only then start suspecting the rack. Although they, too, wear over time, but still it's not what I'd first suspect.

You need to check for play ect in the joints and bushes. It could be an issue with stut top bearings having seized
